Hi Guys i know many of these questions have been asked before but i don't want to hijack anyones post with my questions. So im working on my business plan and my mentor told me to go out and ask questions from other drivers instead of just using his opinion.

Im currently considering working with quality carriers out of baltimore or working the port if i get a tractor. Or leasing on with my mentor and hauling rocks and such the risk is much lower with the dump because he has been massively successful but i want to explore all options. Regardless I think i should be aiming for atleast 1.75 a mile not including fsc.

    So here we go

    1. I have 15k stashed it'll be closer to 20 when I'm ready to actually get around to finalizing things. HOw hard is it to get financing and what are the best places to look im looking at used Semis and dumps in the 25 to 50 range i want to put 10k-12k down.

    2. If you were buying a truck with your existing knowledge of what works and what doesn't what would you be buying. What has the best maintenance/ cheapest maint. I've ruled out all internationals because i don't like anything but the prostar and i simply dont trust that truck unless i can get it with a Cat. I've been driving Cascadias but they seem to always be in the shop although our trucks take a beating being local trucks.

    3. On average what are you spending on fuel. What kind of truck are you driving what kind of mpg, what do you haul? I based my mileage calculations off of 5mpg at 3000 miles a week and looks like fuel would take half of my monthly income if i only get 5mpg .

    4. Have you considered hiring a driver to run your truck? Would you why or why not? I want to run my own truck for a few months to see what the income looks like then hire a driver and work somewhere else to save more money to work on a second truck.

5.Insurance looks stupid to me 10k is that what most new O/Os pay what, companies would you recommend.

    6. I want to stay regional no more that 2 days outside baltimore although im willing to run to florida if i can find good return freight and as far west as Kansas. Thats assuming i dont do the QC local. Any companies you all can recommend that i look into. Does anyone work strictly off of load boards.

    7. Off topic but do you think rates will start to increase because of the driver shortage?

    8. Also how are O/Os surviving on these .98 cpm rates sounds like slave labor almost like buying themselves a job what am i missing.

Any advice you have will be appreciated in helping me put together my business plan I'd like to get the wheels turning in october or next year in march depending on how some of my money tied into stocks goes after a the results of the US food/ Sysco merger are announced.

    1. Depends on credit rating
    2. Do not get caught up in the brand of truck what is under the hood is more important
    3. Depends MPG and how much you run I figure 80 cents but I run more or else local {100 miles radius}
    4. Nope I do not like how most drivers drive
    5. I use Progressive.
    6. You run Florida best get good rates cause the air coming back is cheap
    7. No way
    8. I do not know how they do it

I think you can do way better than 10k for insurance, if your driving record is clean. Shop around.

Also, rocks are an exempt commodity. You could become a carrier of exempt commodities, thus avoiding the need for operating authority, thus avoiding the insurance filings that go with an MC #, and just get commercial insurance. Lots cheaper. After a few years your premiums will be easier to swallow if you then go ahead with being a common carrier.

#7. Rates will only increase for those who properly leverage their services. For the vast majority who don't do this rates will always remain flat.

#8. $1.75 sounds good compared to 98 cents plus surcharge but the truth is for most single truck operations that's a break even average if that. Those who do not sweep some costs under the rug understand that. Those who do will argue. Figure your true cost to roll down the highway, everything, including your living wage to cover all household expenses and every conceivable cost. Doesn't matter if it's not a business expense it's still a cost you have to cover when you're just a single truck. Now multiply that cost per mile by .8 to give you the rate per mile you need to average to make 20% above your cost. Or .75 or whatever your profit goal. Understand if that number is $2.15 or $2.30 or whatever it is to make a 20% profit that RATES of $2.15 or $2.30 are not the kind you need to be accepting on a regular basis to AVERAGE that profitable number.

Dude you are all over the place.

    1. Do you want a semi or a dump truck? Make up your mind. Then go from there.
    2. Something pre emission, a truck that either has NO DPF or if you must have emissions or want/need a newer truck, something that also takes DEF. The DPF only trucks were mostly a failure. If you don't need to meet emissions, then don't bother with them. Something powered with a Cummins or Detroit - they have more abundant shops and they seem to know what they are doing. I would not buy anything with a manufacturer engine (maybe Volvo) - such as the maxxforce or the paccar mx. Search threads on here for info on those motors.
    3. Your fuel bill will have more to do with what type of work you intend to do - which will dictate which type of truck you should buy. If you buy a 600 horse pete to haul local cans around, your fuel bill just might be more than the guy who bought that cascadia who is doing long haul. Again, you need a more solid business plan/model.
    4. Do it yourself first, you just plain don't have enough capital to hire a driver yet. When the numbers look good enough from your own driving, revisit this and work the numbers again. They will be different from you paying yourself vs. you paying someone else to drive.
5,6,7,8. Are you planning to run your own authority? Or sign up for one of those .98+ fuel deals? An owner op would not survive on that deal if the company was not paying their insurance, licencing, ifta, all of that extra stuff. Some people will argue that they are making money, to each their own, I guess. If you plan to go your own authority, yes, your first year of insurance will be expensive. It will depend on your driving record, where you plan to operate, value of your trucks/trailers/cargo hauled. Get lots of quotes, it could be anywhere as low as 7,500 to 25,000 (ballpark figures). As far as not leaving too far from the house - that may be difficult - as a business owner you now need to decide if that high dollar load is worth you being away from home for a little longer. If you could make enough in one month to take the next month off, but would never see the house, would you do it? These are the decisions you will have to make. At least you are in a busy freight lane. There is no such thing as a driver shortage. You can believe that when you go to the store and the owner tells you he couldn't find a driver to bring his product to the market. REMEMBER - IT ALL STILL GETS DONE! The only difference is at what price it gets done for.

"There is no such thing as a driver shortage."

Thank you gokiddogo. That's exactly right on. There are just fewer people who want to ##### themselves out to cheap freight low pay jobs with mountains of regulations. Fewer, but enough. You have to do what those outfits don't or can't.

This has been a total BS line for many years used by mega fleets to hire empty skulls thinking they will make great money from day 1.

I've decided Semi i'd never be happy running a dump truck in circles even if the money is good thats something ill invest in down the road when i have the ability to hire someone else to run it.

** I dont need to meet emissions but i am concerned the northeast will end up like CA. I love the Volvo but i dont want to take a risk on buying because of the maint. I pretty much decided i should just look at Columbias Cascadias both with detroits and the prostart with Cummins. I dont want to buy to old a truck and lose out on opportunities most of the companies ive researched want 08 or newer.

**** Id like a hugh engine but at days end i have to make money a regular 15l will be good enough with hp in the mid fours i been stuck in trucks that only do 62 since i got my cdl it wouldnt kill me to continue that on my own.

*** YOu are right i considered hiring someone and taking a month off from my job but its stupid i was trying to get instant gratification with that thought. Ill live poor and stash every penny i can ill live off the missus she is working toward being a pediatrician
**I'd like to run my own authority but i think it would be wise to work with one of the big companies initially i cant do the .98 thats going poor. Im going to continue to do research before making that decision. I dont want to take the hard route trying to prove it can be done. I can admit although im a business minded person i have never taken on anything this huge and with my own money running a store a managing corporates money is easy in comparison. I couldnt work a month and not see the house because the wife would murder me when i return she is a bit needy lol ill probably rest when im on the road being home is difficult. I have to get her to think me being out a couple weeks is her idea. The freight volume up here is what had me hopping i could get home often but ill decide that in the coming months.
