I have a class c with hazmat. I work for a medical supply company in michigan and have been hauling oxigen to nursing homes for over 4 years. My goal is to some day own a truck and trailer and run under my own athorotiy. I do realize that there steps to this process. Should i start out with a company to get experience? I could get my class A on my own and just buy a truck and trailer...? I have been looking into oilfield class a jobs in north dakota as well. I just to provide a better income for me and my family. I also understand that you have to start out some where. Please help with positive advise.

With no Class-A OTR experience, it may be difficult to find an insurance company to insure a new owner-operator. Check OOIDA website to learn what's involved in being an owner-operator.
Get 2 or 3 yrs. experience then re-evaluate becoming an owner-operator.
Millis Transfer has their own CDL school and drivers average $50K per year.
Con-way is reopening their CDL school in Romulus; might check with that company.
NTB Inc is a good company for future reference after you finish a CDL program. NTB Inc. is based in Michigan. -
You're putting you cart 10 miles in front of your horse. Get the CDL-A, get at least a years worth of experience, maybe more as a company driver and then decide what you want to do. Can a new guy buy his own truck & trailer and go into business? Sure he can, will it work out? Probably not.

Get a truck and trailer and start hauling freight

Give Conway Truckload a call. You can get the class A in Taylor, MI, go on the road with a trainer for a few weeks, they will pay most of your schooling off on the day you deliver your first load solo, and no contracts. They figure if you don't like it there, why hold you hostage. First year pay is better than the others, by second year, I didn't want to leave...almost 4 years now.
Good luck. -
What are you guys gonna tell them next, DOT is their to give directions and escort them to the nearest truckstop. Fact is trucking is a tough life and your chances of sucess is about as good as a blind man playing scrabble with gypsies.
HalpinUout Thanks this. -
LOL... I agree... For someone who has a family and hasn't hit the road yet as the OP stated, If I were you I would check into LOCAL companies first and go that route and see how you like it... Already having your Hazmat is a big step but to be with the "Big Boys" a class C will keep you with the "little boys"... I'm not sure where in Michigan you are but there are many LTL companies I would recommend you trying first who will either "train or school you" versus going OTR... Try the LTL biz first then see where that takes you... Wife,Kids,Family then skip to OTR from normal life= butcher block -
