I wanna know what is the best way to go, as far as cost(overhead) ratio to pay, if I am trying to start my own authority to run tankers verses refer/dry van? I became an owner operator in 2006, but continued to lease on to carriers. I've been driving tankers for over 6 years now, and I've been driving for over 14 years total. I wanna know a ball park summary of cost distinction between trucking authority running tanks verses refer/dry van. I have all of my hazmat credentials, TWIC card, my credit is high 600's Low 700's and I have a clean driving record. With all of this said, what am I up against in cost obtaining authority to run tankers verses refer/dry van?

    Ukumfe Thanks this.

The authority cost is not going to be any different.........the insurance for hazmat IS going to be different though.

So, will the insurance for tankers be 50% more in cost or less?

Well over double to haul hazmat tanker. Call a local truck insurance company and ask for a quote.

I miss pulling tankers but really wanted to run under my own authority so went with a flat. Unless your hauling petroleum it wouldnt be feasable IMO unless you owned several trailers and had the ability to drop and hook with a network of your own customers that were using the same product in them. Othrwise you would be constantly dealing with tank washes etc. You say you have been pulling tanks for 6 years so you may already have some type of plan rolling. I do miss them myself.

I agree, I haul tanks for a company in MA, and if you don't own several trailers with a good customer base the cost is prohibitive. Good luck

Anybody know any starter tanker companies with no tank experience and only 12 months otr dry van? Other than Schneider they hire out of certain areas,
which brings me to another point why is there not many otr tanker companies and why are they so hard to find,
I've never heard of a o/o that hauled tanks btw..
