I argued a buddy of mines down,he says he don't fill up his tank to run,
HE ONLY FILLS UP ENOUGH TO PICK UP AND LOAD AND DROP OFF AND RETURN BACK TO BASE,he hauls Oilfield equipment with a flatbed 53 ft
He says he saves more money like that.
But I say he's wasting time and money because,
,every time you get a load you have to go get FUEL,
But he SWEARS BY THIS routine
Now I understand he don't wanna spend $650-700 when he only going 300 miles
But keep stopping to fuel up GETS OLD REAL FAST!
But I think the more you pump the more you get
Not the less you pump the less you get
What Do you do?
Fuel for Load or just Fill the TANK UP?
Fuel for load or fill tank?

depends on the price of fuel..some times I will fill up with half tanks because of price some times I will go until I/8 of tanks until I fuel,,better to fill up to to reduce the empty volume ,,in high humidity areas condensation builds up and you end up with water that condenses in your tanks,
You are going to continue to need fuel, about half the time used when fueling at truckstops is getting on and off the road,,only adds a few more minutes to fill up. Good fuel management can save time and money,, -
Being a leased O/O I dont have to pay IFTA. So I buy the cheapest fuel I can find. I have 150 gal tanks, and often I'll stop and top off maybe 50 or so gals if it means saving $.30 or more at the pump. I've learned where many of the cheaper Sinclairs, Diamond Shamrock and other independent spots are. For example,.. In the last 30 days, I dont think I have paid over $3.68 gal. Cheapest I've found was 2 weeks ago in Texas for $3.43 gal, and today I just paid $3.62 in Cheyenne at the Diamond Shamrock.
There is an online website that I use to help plan my fuel stops. Not sure if its permitted to show the URL,.. but I'll take a chance. http://www.findfuelstops.com
I use that when I am uncertain, plus I have regular cheap stops that I go to memorized.

if the truck is ru nning, it's burning fuel. that truck don't care if it's 1/8 full or 8/8 full. it's going to burn fuel.
he can fill up 1/2 today and 1/2 tomorrow. or he can fill up full today and not fuel tomorrow. either way, he spends the same amount of money.
i can see if fuel comes out of a weekly settlement. that at the end of the week you only put in enough to finish the week. more money in his pocket by buying fuel on a week to week basis. or he can fill up completely. for the week. have less money one week, but more next week. he has more money cuz last week's fuel carried over to this week. so he didn't have to buy as much for the second week.
no matter how you slice and dice. the truck needs fuel and your going to pay for it. at the end of the week, or month, or year. you've spent the same amount of money.
people that think they're saving money by buying 1 gallon at a time. is crazy.
when i was buying my own fuel. i bought for the week. on the last load. i bought just enough to get me home. and to the truckstop next week to start off with full tanks again. -
from the ops post. it sounds like his buddy understand that he can't drink fuel. I use to do that very same thing when I pulled containers out of the Chicago ramps. it's called budget and balance. budget the spending to balance cost. which leads to a better profits.

I was hauling heavy for a while and could only buy $300 per day in fuel. Sometimes I would fuel twice in a day. What I found out that was interesting was my quarterly IFTA payment was very low every quarter since I was burning the fuel to run in each state.

Fuel is a commodity, so you should work your fuel strategy based on this thought. In the long run, you'll save money if you fill your tanks with the lowest price fuel you can find in route.

I guess I'm confused what your saying. It works exactly the way I stated. I do only write one check but the calculation works like I wrote.
