If you have to ask, you are not ready yet. Hang in there, you will know if and when it is time for you to buy a job.

Any time you want to .
I started by buying a truck and driving for myself .
It was not the best way to learn trucking but I never forgot any lesson I learned !!!
It will be easier to make it if you learn to drive the other mans truck first .
It also takes some time to figure out what part of trucking you really fit in with the best .
Trucking is a sink or swim type business so some find it to be a cold hard mistress .
When you do buy your own it is all on you to make it not anyone else just you .
Allot of people blame everyone and everything but themselves when they fail .
The cold hard truth is that every choice you make has consequences and some of those choice will bite you in the wallet real hard .
If you really want to be an O/O then I say go for it no better time than when you are ready to be the man in charge.exhausted379 and Lucar Thank this. -
When you feel you're ready.
You can't plan for everything. I drove for a company about a year and then bought a used truck with no money down. Never looked back or doubted my decision. One thing that is nice to know, as long as you take care of your CDL, even if your first try doesn't pan out you can still go work for someone else. Figure out what you did wrong and try again.
There is no right time. It is a lot less stressful if you have a big nest egg.
I pulled houses so I didn't have a trailer. That saved a lot of money on overhead. -
As soon as you get chance to buy truck.
I bought truck after 2month driving and I'm glad I did. -

When you have enough money to buy a truck (not lease). I would suggest that you start looking on truckpaper for the type of truck you want. Start saving for a down payment, and look into a low rate loan from a bank or credit union. Because, the difference between a lease payment of 300-600 a week vs. a monthly loan payment of 500-700 a month really makes a difference. Heck, if you had the funds to buy the truck outright you would be light years ahead and could really have a lot of early success.

First, more than anything, more than knowing how to drive, more than finding the best truck, more than anything - KNOW HOW TO RUN A BUSINESS. You are running a business. It's not a job. A job is when you work for someone else. Your truck is your tool. Your load is from your client. Know how to run numbers backwards and forwards. Have you done a lot of back and forth with brokers or do you have your own shippers? PM me if you want to talk offline.

Don't talk offline tamiami-you are giving the correct advise, and it'd be good for others to see it in the future.
