detroit engine problem

    I have a Detroit series 60 engine and it begins to stall after I start it up, but restarts itself. I can drive it, but every 20 seconds or so it'll do the same thing. mechanic is saying bad ecm. any clues on if that could be it or is there something else to look into

    Have the electrical grounds checked first. It's not just Detroits that this happens to.

    Ditto on checking the main ground to the ECM. Not sure on newer trucks, but on Columbia, Century and Classic, its attached at the battery box. Detroit, CAT, Mercedes,.. all experience this problem. It can lead to the ECM burning up if it hasnt happened already. Not sure for the Detroit,.. but new ECM for C15 is $2100 plus injector programming. Very pricey.

    The other possible cause,.. and again I'm not sure on the Detroit. But with a CAT with the DPF,.. if any part of the regen fails and it goes into limp mode, once the DPF reaches a certain point, it goes into Safe Mode. Engine runs for about 30 - 45 seconds and shuts off. It will restart,.. but shut off after 30 - 45 seconds. Usually emissions relating to virtually anything in the DPF system,.. ARD head (Igniter failing) Lower sensor, upper sensor, DPF unable to clean itself and needing replacement,.. the list goes on. If older than 2006, my money would be on ground wire. If 2006 or newer,.. It could be emissions or ground wire.

    Ground wire and battery connections you can check and repair yourself. DPF,.. well once the code has been tripped,.. only a shop can reset it.
