Depending on how much time out of the truck you plan on having it could be a toss up either way. If you plan on running hard... 120,000 or more miles a yr an APU would probably pay for itself.
These are my opinions on the matter. What are your plans?

Well, the carrier I am leased on with runs me home every weekend. So really, only 5 nights a week of idling or idle aire.

    ASSUMING every thing here.

That you idle 10 hrs every night you are out.

    Fuel is $2.809

Cost per week to idle for comfort is $140

With holidays, vacations, and sick days you only work 50 weeks out of the yr.

Yrly idle cost is going to be $7022.

Cost of Tripac installed is around $8000.

Cost of idleing for comfort for 2.5 yrs is $17,556. Minus the cost of the APU has you down to $9,556 SAVINGS. Subtract the cost of running the APU those same amount of nights. APUs roughly burn 1/8 gallon an hr. (pint) means that you'll have $781 in fuel costs for the APU. Leaving you at $8,775 in savings. Subtract another $200 or $300 for maintenance in that period and your savings are EASILY $8,000+ in a 2.5 yr time frame.

THINK ABOUT IT, WHAT TOYS COULD YOU BUY WITH $8000?????

The newer EGR engines don't get 1gph idling.....it's more like 1.5-1.7gph!!! That really adds up quick! I run the Tri-Pak...and love it....you get the 1800w inverter with it....

What ever you do.....stay away from the Rigmaster. We have several guys that are fighting with the leasing company to get them off their trucks....they keep breaking.....

Well, as soon as I can work out my Grant to finance the TriPac, I will schedule the install.

Please let us know what it cost installed. I've heard a lot of numbers thrown around, but never any numbers from a customer.

This may be a rather esoteric question.

I wonder if the fuel you use for "creature comforts" falls under the non-taxed home heating scenario?

I could see this for a APU but I wonder if it's a worthwhile effort to determine this for engine only fuel usage. I present an interest in this because I recall that refer fuel is also exempt from certain road taxes. Maybe "climate controls" could fall in the same category as Home heating/cooling fuel?

If so, this would change the calculations for ROI on the APU's & the economics of idling compared to APU's. Of course it won't change these ridiculous anti-idling laws but it makes the cost of idling that much easier to swallow.

Interesting concept. Don't you get a tax break as it is for having the APU?

In dash displays are not 100% accurate.
