Are there alternatives to driving a traditional semi and still be in this industry? I see lots of pickups with flatbed type trailers attached or maybe a motor home with one if those 40' or so trailers behind it? Is there a viable alternative?

Check out the hot-shot/expediters section of the forum... lots of info on there about the duallies with the flatbed goosenecks.

As for using a motorhome with a big trailer behind it... I'd imagine almost all of those are privately owned and just being used for recreation... good luck maneuvering a setup like that in an unfamiliar location.

I have seen some dually pickups with some modifications to the cab to make the back seat a legal sleeper berth.

I agree with dfo, usually motorhomes are retired rich folks pulling their race car around the country. Hotshots used to be a good deal, and maybe still are in some cases, but I think regular flatbed guys are taking a lot of those loads, and making several drops. There is also straight trucks with sleepers, that used to be called "white glove" loads, meaning, they were highly specialized, LTL (just a pallet or 2) that had to be somewhere yesterday. Don't see a lot of those anymore.

try the expeditorsOnline forum. has more info about hotshot and expedite trucks and equipment. A lot of under-CDL and under log-book outfits on there. Some surprising stuff, guys that use a regular old van running small loads and living in it with 600,000+ miles on a little gas V8 without a rebuild. You want to see some freight hauling variety, that's the place.
