I have been a dispatcher for years. My husband is an o/o.

I opened my own company 6 months ago. Have 9 amazing drivers. 1 of my new owner operators (2 weeks new) left a pick up after he accepted the load and was in line checked in waiting to be loaded. I terminated employment immediately. My husband felt bad being a n owner operator himself and rehired the guy after he begged to stay on and was almost in tears.

He has NEVER hauled for under $3.30/mile with us. Today he accepted a load for 600 miles at $3.50 a mile. he went to pick up, waited 1.5 hours, was assigned a dock. He called my husband and said that he was going home because he didn't feel like doing the load. I terminated him again and this time for good.

Now my conscious is back & forth. I do not like to terminate but I feel like he really screwed me over this. The Broker is so pissed at me. The pay was great for the mileage and he accepted the load on his own--no forced dispatched here..

I would like to hear anyone's opinion that is willing to tell me what their company policy is on things like this? Have you ever heard of this happening?

    Thanks in advance guys:)

You have done the right thing, both times. You can't build a business on SERVICE with folks like that. Good for you!

I think that the first thing you and your husband need to do is get on the same page. You need to back up one another when it comes to making business decisions. I would have canceled that owner operator's contract, as well, if things are exactly as you describe. It doesn't make any difference whether the guy wasn't feeling good or not. If he committed to a load, then he should do what he agreed to do....PERIOD. You and your husband may want to sit down and establish some ground rules and put an operations manual together that includes reasons for termination.

First things first - you did the right thing. You do not need owner operators like that.

Second thing, fully agreed on a company handbook. Write every ground rule that a driver or owner operator must abide by. Have them sign off on it and put a copy of the signature'd page in their DQ File.

Thank you guys so much. I really felt bad over it but at the same time I'm like what the heck. I was good to him and what did I get in return. I run an honest operation here. Everything is out in the open. I email ALL of my O/O's rate cons from the broker, that's my style and mostly everyone loves it.

I am still blowing smoke from the ears over it. gosh!

I am updating the company manual asap tonight or first thing tomorrow morning. Thank you for the suggestions. I really appreciate it:)

Should have never taken him back after first time and that idiot was no o/o he was a wannabe moron. There's loads that all of us at one time or another had long loading or unloading wait times but you suck up and deal with it. Just cause your name is on title or door we all have to answer to someone and that rookie hasn't figured that out yet. Be it shipper broker receiver banker or your spouse.

If it's your own company as stated tell hubby the hiring and firing decisions are yours alone to make.

Sounds like you don't need his help in that dept.

Oh guys. It's bad. I told him I need my trailer as soon as possible and he is threatening to damage it to a total loss or leave it in Gary, IN in a part of town where it will just disappear.

I guess I deserved this. I always try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. He also called me and threatened me over a voicemail. I sent out his last payroll check just now. I want nothing to do with this guy.

How do I get my trailer back? Help? Police are telling me it's civil since trailer is mine but he pays monthly rent...help. I am loosing it. real winner here I am dealing with.

    Suggestions?

Get this....he text me and said I am going to this huge forum called truckers report to tell them my story about you and your company. I was like ok, tell them I never booked you for under $3.20 a mile and kept you within 650 miles of home, and you got a paycheck every Friday and the icing on the cake is that I sent you all your rate confirmations from broker. I gave you my 100%...please go spread the word about me!

Sorry, I just need to vent...
