You CDL does not expire if you don't drive. I'm guessing you meant, how do I keep my CDL experience current? I'm sure you could find a part time job with a local construction company and probably under the table.

Most freight loads and unloads on weekdays. Owning a truck is expensive. I think you would have a lot of trouble keeping afloat if you owned a truck and only ran on weekends. You can keep your CDL indefinitely without actually driving as long as you can pass the DOT physical. But, if you want to keep your skill level up and be marketable, you will need to drive. Most companies require 6-12 months experience during the last 3 years as a minimum. Check with your local state employment office. They might have some part time positions open.

The only requirement is self certification with your state.

The Medical Review Program helps ensure that CDL drivers meet Federal Regulation 49 CFR 391.41 Physical Qualifications for Drivers and CFR 391.43.
Starting May 21, 2014, all commercial motor vehicle drivers must have a physical performed by a medical examiner listed on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.
We review the DOT Medical Examination Report (long form) and Medical Examiner Certificate (cert card, or short form) for completeness and ensure the medical examiner has qualified the driver according to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Regulations.
Arizona requires all CDL drivers, including those in the military, to keep a current Medical Examiner Certificate on file with MVD. The Medical Examiner Certificate is to be renewed every 24 months or sooner, as determined by the medical examiner or by regulation. Failure to maintain a current certificate on file with MVD will result in the suspension and revocation of your CDL.

AZ CMV Drivers (CDL holders) are required to provide this information to the ADOT , failure to do so will result in a suspended CDL.

Keeping the CDL may not be the problem. Finding a driving job after being out of the drivers seat after 2-3 years could prevent you from finding a job without having to go with a trainer or attending a refresher course. I have a friend who sold his truck and took a non driving job. After awhile he started to miss the road so he found a job pulling a flat on the weekends. He keeps his work experience active and if and when he decides to go otr or buy another truck, he will be ready. It took him awhile to find something that would work for him, but he seems to enjoy it.
