I run a cargo van and a small pickup with trailers behind them. Probably make about $1.25/mile including dh, which is pretty good considering my gas is pretty low in comparison to most trucks and the cost of vehicle is much lower.
Was thinking of hiring driver and was wondering what to pay them. Was thinking 47.5% of the bill and split the tolls and gas? Was wondering if you guys think this is too much, little, etc. Thanks.
Hiring drivers- what is fair pay?

Split tolls and gas. Seriously? so you want to pay them 27cents a mile and split fuel and tolls outa that? LOL!!
112racing Thanks this. -
I haven't been an owner-operator, but I would recommend just absorbing the tolls/fuel into the situation so the driver doesn't think he's paying any fuel or tolls. That's just the psycology of it. Figure the drivers pay after expenses. For example only; the driver gets XX% of what the load pays only. A fuel card for fuel and reimburse the driver for tolls with receipts. OOIDA website probably has a spread sheet for good record keeping on this. -
A few more cents on a % paid on the fuel saved on trips would make driver want to save that fuel and tolls, 20% of all moneys saved on trips that you have good idea of what it costs you per mi. to run, its easer to share the savings than to take away some of the drivers ck. for 75gals extra of fuel that you dont know where it went at end of the week.

you wont find very many decent drivers for that kind of deal, if I was to take the job I wouldnt want to see any less than 40cpm but thats just my opinion.

For example a 1000 mile trip gets $1250. The gas for on a trip like that for me would be about 100 gallons @say 3.25 gallon= 325. Say tolls on average of $25. You are talking about the driver netting $625-175= $450, or, .45 per mile. I also think I will be able to make more per mile for the truck bc I will be full time dispatching. .45/mile for driving something that doesnt require a cdl, maybe more per mile, seems pretty good to me.

Do you have sleepers in your trucks? If not you will have to think about somewhere to stay for their 10 hour break.
1000 miles is probably 20 + hours.
