    Hey y'all, thanks in advance to all who respond. But I got an air compressor that's giving me morning pains when cranking up the truck. I have to wait about 15 minutes to raise the heat high enough (150f-175f) to get my air compressor to start filling up my air tanks. The thing is, once they're filled up for the day I have no issues at all. But since the weather is getting colder, I'm having to take longer and longer to warm it up to get the valve to open/close to get air flowing.

    my guess is that there's soot built up in the release valve that opens and closes and it's having to be heated up to activate properly.

    so that leads me to the question, should I just get the overhaul kit and go for an overhaul, or replace the whole air compressor? One is much cheaper than the other of course laugh out loud.

    Chances are the compressor will have to be sent out to be rebuilt and can take a while. Usually it's just a swap for yours and an in stock rebuilt one.

    bigNATURE Thanks this.

    You gonna do the work yourself? Idk about newer compressors, my TuFlo550 had a rebuild kit that was a lot cheaper....but after you pay labor to pull it off, rebuild and remount it was equivalent pricing. (Also the core for mine was $35 more than the reman one I bought, so that made more sense for me)

    I might have to just chunk up the couple grand to do it all then. I've been putting this off for months now laugh out loud. It's just really becoming a pain as this cold weather sits in.

    Have you had the compressor checked to see if it is the compressor? It might be a valve and that would be much less expensive. Have you checked the air governor? It might be worth the cost to have someone check it for you before doing anything.

    bigNATURE and Ruthless Thank this.

    No I haven't had anyone check that. That's what I think it is, the unload valve. What should I ask when I go to get it checked? I was also just checking the cummins insite on it, and they're talking about;

    Replace the air compressor air cleaner (if installed). Check the air intake piping. Check engine air intake restriction if the air compressor inlet is plumbed to the vehicle or equipment intake system. Refer to the OEM service manual.

    I have a good shop in Texarkana but that's like 300mi from my home laugh out loud. I'm surrounded by crooks laugh out loud, but I have a Napa big truck service center close to the house that works on all the farm trucks, then a peterbilt and Cummins in Jackson MS. It just seems like when going to a peterbilt and if they don't know you, it's just a waste of time to get them to check something when you already know they're gonna try and tell you to replace the whole part, then charge you for inspecting. You know the typical krook mentality. I try not to pre-judge these shops, I just keep my guard up around them.
