I always thought that in a case like that the fines are huge, you might get turned around or you might have to have someone come and remove weight to make you legal. In this case, a driver friend was in Virginia where he supposedly got stopped in a weight station and was over weight by 1400 pounds. He was fined $85($civil penalty,$20 processing fee, $2 weighting fee, $18 liquidated damages and $20 additional liquidated damages). My guess was that the officer was nice and just allowed him to purchase some time of overweight permit, but since the fine was detailed, no permit was issued. Can someone explain?

How did you come up with $90? I counted $145 in fines. In VA the OW fine itself isn t too bad, its when they add in all the other fees that will get you

I believe its so many cents per pound, but it also varies from state to state, and scale to scale

I know a guy who had $800 for 4k over gross, it makes me ask why he didn't scale. and his answer was the usual arrogance

they probably write so many overweight tickets that its not expensive to be heavy

in utah, 1500 over on end dump axle. $50. it was a construction job. no scales. just some cop who was bored that day and weighing all the trucks at the dump site.

in oregon. i was perfectly legal for 49 of the 50 states. $300 for being 2500 over OREGON bridge.

Confused about this one. Over weight on drives is an out of service until your legal.
