So where is everyone going to go with the big carriers going to some sort of logs?
Mercer used to be any age truck now its 97 and newer BC of ELDS.
Does a guy try to go independent and use load boards?
Just thinking out loud.

and you can keep on thinking out loud. cuz you can bet that day will be sure to come.
i seen a brochure in the office today. someone made a cold call to sell his product to the company. with 6 ways eld's will improve his company efficiency. -
Upgrade to 97 electronics!
-
Congress had mandated ELDs for all trucks so it's going to happen within the next few years. Don't know how you would upgrade a mechanical engine to '97 electronics, but I'm sure someone will figure something out on this. There are a lot of good older trucks on the road.

Why would a electronic logging device need to hook into the engine at all ???
All it will need is gps device .
It can track speed time and keep track of your status be it on duty driving or sleeper and off duty .
All the government needs to do is set the standards and then any one of a thousand companies can begin making the device .
That may even include your smart phone and a blue tooth printer .DrtyDiesel and blacklabel Thank this. -
Anyone with good programming knowledge, a good knowledge of how logging works and an open mind to listen to truckers and their needs can build an app or software that does everything that needs to be done and be compliant to be an actual EOBR, not just an ELD.blacklabel Thanks this. -

So mandating an age limit based on the fact that you need electronics on the engine for them to work just shows a companies lack of understanding the basic concept of LED's or EOBR's .
This is especially true when there aren't even any regulations on how and what needs to be recorded to meet the standards that don't exist yet .blacklabel Thanks this. -
those idiots with mandates are killing the trucking industry and the country. Soon or later mandates will be broken.

I scrapped out a truck a while ago, it was a 1980 GMC something or another class 7 flatbed, I got the thing for the engine, I turned a good dime on the parts but the oddest thing that I found on the truck was a computer hook up that is on a lot of trucks (not J-1939 type but the earlier version) and a little box that had a bunch of sensors hooked to it. I looked and looked for the company that was on the box but they were out of business or bought up. The thing worked when I hooked it to my laptop, I could read historical data from the box, so I assume that there is a system out there for mechanical trucks that will adapt these systems for the EOBR without too much hassle.blacklabel Thanks this.
