hello, i have a question... first i shall explain the scenerio... i have a 2000 western star and a 2012 Utility trailer. The ABS system is brake actuated and with this combination, the ABS is working as it should, which means when I turn the key to run position i do not have the idiot light to show that the system is working ok. I press the brake and i see the ABS light turning on for 1-2 seconds and turning off as it should. we are told we need to have a key on system of continual power, we are also told it is as easy as splicing a power wire to the system, we do not have constant power. My questions are: 1. Does anyone know if this is a DOT rule? (i checked and key-on for this combination isn't in the rule.) 2. Does anyone have that easy fix or the instructions or know of a mechanic or company that has installed or wired a key-on constant power.

Had this problem over and over with conway trailers when a company driver. I believe the fix was just to swap the wires going to the trailer module -- it took the conway trailer shop ~15 min to fix.

Yes, the DOT regs specify a key-on status check. FMVSS No. 121

If the power is on only under braking, you would never know if there was a malfunction until you hit the brakes (and held them on long enough for a system check).

Correction -- it meant the constant power center wire had a bad circuit. The brake power was a backup

You run power on the blue wire to the middle post of the plug. This power is turned on and off with the key. It needs to be a 40 amp service to the blue wire. then to the trailer powering the ABS nothing but the ABS should be on this blue power wire. You need an ABS light cord also. The ABS light only comes on when you turn the power (OR key) on for 1 or 2 seconds this means it working.
