    Hi,

I am a graduate student in Oklahoma. I have a research project that I need the help of owner operators on. My project is how the price of fuel affects owner operators. I have some questions that need to be answered. I will attach the questions to this post. If you wish to fill it out, I would be very grateful. If you know someone who you think might fill it out, please share it.

I am not new to the trucking industry. My father was an owner op for many years. I have spent my time in a truck as well. Therefore that is why I decided to do my research on this subject.

Your privacy will be protected. No names are required. I have an email set up for the set of questions to be returned to.

Thank you so much for your help.

Questions # 8 and # 11 should be modified a bit to higher ranges , pretty low for even a 1 truck operation

If you need to add a new range or if you travel the lower 48, just indicate that in other. Thank you

I'd STRONGLY suggest editing #11. Just about any OTR or regional driver on this forum will tell you their MONTHLY average miles are in the 10-11k range and even the highest number specified on your survey (30k miles) is waaaaay too low for a yearly total.

I under stand that 30,000 is a low estimate for someone who runs the lower 48, that is the reason is has over 30000. With that, I can get a good plot showing a relationship between fuel consumed and miles traveled.

We have guys on our regional fleets running 3-4 states running 90-100k per year. Most of our OTR drivers are in the 110-125K range. My point is if you want accurate data you should be asking the right questions. There's a very big difference between someone who runs a vocational truck 40k miles per year and an OTR or regional driver running 100k plus. And fuel usage is very different depending on the type of driving one does and the age/make/model of truck. I average (with a 2014 Cascadia) anywhere from 7 to 9 mpg on any given trip depending on load weight. On the other hand there are guys with older KWs and Pete's that get 5-6mpg running the same type of freight I run. LTL and P+D drivers get fewer MPG on average because of multiple stop-start types of trips. Some Vocational trucks would get even less because they have to idle a lot to operate a PTO driven accessory on the job which eats up a ton of fuel.

So again, my point is if you're trying to judge how fuel costs affect any given O/O you need to ask more questions and more importantly the right questions. Good luck with your project.

Businessmen create theory from practice. Academics/politicians mandate practice from theory...

Those survey ranges are so far out of whack for my operation, it isn't worth filling out.

Thanks for your input and trust me, I understand that everyone is different. But in order to not have any biased observations, I have to be subjective as to how the questions are asked.

Translation: I don't really care about this project -- I forgot all about it and now its due Monday so I don't have time to learn what I need to know to make appropriate changes. I just want to get it done, get my grade, and move on to the next project, then rinse & repeat until I graduate. Please just answer it the best you can and ignore the fact that I don't know enough to know what questions to ask.

Your questions are far from subjective. If you want as close to unbiased answers as possible, you would just ask people to supply their numbers instead of asking them to pick from your biased ranges.

Double yellow, you are far off the mark. No this project is not due Monday nor did I forget about it. So if you don't wish to participate then keep your rude comments to yourself. I can see that by asking this to a group of people who think they are truck drivers to answer simple questions with a check mark, that it has gone over their heads. This is a questionnaire designed to gain information needed to complete a project that you have no understanding of nor will you ever.

I am assuming you have been in a "trucker" for three years, then you have no idea of what I am talking about.
