Good business sense should be enough.

If you have good business sense then you will have enough sense not to put a driver with little or no experience (including yourself) in one of your trucks. :biggrin_25523:

One of the smartest truck company owners I ever knew never drove a truck in his life, and he was extremely successful. He did things like show up every day in the office to oversee things. This was a small co. (60 trucks). He became an International dealer so he could buy his trucks cheaper and get parts cheaper. Kinda like Sam Tanksley out of Cape Girardeau, Mo. whos Father-in-law owned 2 Pete dealerships and 2 Dorsey trailer stores. Guess what kind of equipment Sam ran ? In theory, it's better to have been a driver, but, I must say this about that.....In the 70's an ex trucker quit trucking and opened a truck stop in Ozona Tx. He said because he was an ex driver, he knew what drivers wanted, so, be sure and patronize his truck stop ! But, his prices were very high, his showers were very small, etc. That truck stop is still there or was last year along with a motel and RV park.

I have been in this and other business for many years. A good businessman can learn what he needs to know, but may spend a lot of money with the learning curve. This is a very capital intensive business and mistakes can be costly. A good businessman will take the time to learn the business from the ground up. A good businessman stands a much greater chance of being successful than a good driver with no business sense. If you have deep enough pockets you can come into this business and possibly survive. I have known few who start a trucking company and achieved success who did not have some driving experience first.
