RV means even your own stuff that you are moving around will be restricted. For example, if you pull your mud truck out for a weekend of recreational funning around, you'd be OK. If you are competing in a mud race and money is part of the equation (entry fee/monetary awards), then it is commercial. There have been horse people who had RV tags on their living quarters horse trailer (basically a camper trailer with horse stalls) who got in trouble using that recreational trailer tagged horse trailer to transport their horses to a show or rodeo...money was up for grabs, so it wasn't "recreational". The scrutiny would be pretty intense if you were hauling ANYTHING on or in a trailer behind an RV tagged semi tractor.

Your best bet is to go to your state and check there, I can't see any reason why not as long as you are doing what you wrote.
You can haul anything you want on your own trailers, but you would have to stop at scales like every one to show you are not overweight, over length and that you have secured your load properly.
Display on the doors " not for hire ".
Just make sure you have all your paperwork in order, just like a regular truck for hire has to.
I will be very surprised if this is not true like you wrote how and what you are thinking of doing.

I talked to the CHP they said it was legal but there is maximum truck & trailer combination length of 65 feet but I wanted to see if anyone on here had real world experience with this scenrio

Life would be so much easier if I can use a hydraulic dovetail or lowboy so I dont have to lug ramps back and forth

From my understanding I would be exempt from stopping at scales because thats for commercial vehicles (see below)

2813. Every driver of a commercial vehicle shall stop and submit the vehicle to an inspection

Now here is the motorhome / house car exemption from stopping at scales

    (b) Passenger vehicles which are not used for the transportation of persons for hire, compensation, or profit and housecars are not commercial vehicles. ...

I just spoke to 3 highway patrol offices and they all said the same thing

    1. A house car / motorhome is exempt from going through scales

    2. A house/ motorhome can pull whatever trailer it wants as the only classification for trailer is a trailer there is no designation for a commercial trailer

    rexmanno and DrtyDiesel Thank this.

Neighbor has two trucks registered as rv's. Does he get stopped and asked what he's carrying....yes. They will ask you a hundred questions but just tell them it's personal property and leave it at that. He runs all over the country.

One has a custom built rollback on it. The other pulls a custom built step deck.
