My dads thinking about buying a truck and sand can. Former o/o got out in 08 when fuel went sky high been a company driver since. He's very partial to mack but doesn't know too much about the new series. Last one he had was a 94ch mechanical 400 that he ran close to 2 million miles. He's looking to spec a titan with 20k fronts and 52k rears, mp10, 18sp eaton w/390 rears, will be doing a lot of off road with it.

What years should we run away from? I know the motor is basically a volvo. Any other info you could give us would be greatly appreciated, my dads been out of the mack loop for a while. If the oilfield goes to hell in a hand basket, you can still pull freight and pay it off

Alot of oil companies use Mack trucks, They can take a beating on lease roads. I have operated many, none were 18sp though. They were 10 or 13sp.

The mack titans are great. Not only can you get them with 605 horse but they put a larger % to the ground than most other companies. I watched a local competition where there was a brand new 600 pete and a 605 mack getting dynod and the mack put a extra 20 or so horsepower to the tires.

As was stated, there are alot of them in the oil patch.

That's good to hear, my dad plans on getting the 565 or 605 since we live in north east pa we see nothing but hills. Deff want the 18, on these lease roads its nice to split the bottom when your climbing some of these mtns. Can you go any bigger than a 42in sleeper on those? Not too big of deal if you can't just a 60in midroof or so would be nice. Do the earlier ones (08-11) have any probs we should know about, mainly with the electrical system? idk if will go that old prob looking at a `12 or newer

A lot of the ones we have looked at have 20k fronts 52 rears w/390s 18sp and that seems best all around for hd use

Suprisingly around here we haven't been seeing that many macks. Id say 1 in every 10 is a mack. mostly dominated by kw, pete, Western stars. My dad's running a sand can in a 2011 western star and he says its a pos all around

MP10 is a Volvo D16 with different paint color. Do a research on D16, and then run. Really fast

What's wrong with the d16? They used to have turbo issues in 06-07 but that was adressed. Besides that the only issue was injector cups which have been updated but still do have a tendency to go.

But what motor out there doesn't have some issues that guys on this forum are complaining about? I'll take the hard pulling d16 and it's measly cup issue anyday.

The problem is when looking online, people only mention something online when they are complaining. Read between the lines...... 90% of d16 complaints posts will be pre 2010 because they've all been addressed.

And it seems that there is a little more attention paid by Volvo to the Mack engine line up. Even though they are basically the same engines, there are a few differences between them, be it slight mechanical change or ECM programming.

Every engine has it own issues But thanks for addressing those issues. I heard elsewhere about the injector cups,,,,is the an aftermarket brand that's better? My dads a stickler for proper maintenance so as long as we keep on it we shouldn't have to worry about much.

I'm not sure about after market but I know they've updated the oem once twice. Stainless and maybe copper? Can't remember. ..... I haven't heard of macks mp8 or MP10 having the same issues thought.

I just prefer the d16 because with a quick deisel spec tune you can be putting massive power out of it and it can handle it from stock. Better turbo.... look at the volvo fh16 in the EU. Or who hold the record for longest super road train (mack)

Everyone has their favorite. I've got a tunes up cat as well but I like my volvo better.
