Should be able to get a used truck in good condition for 50-60k maybe less if you look in the right places. My dad hauling sand uses 60ish gal in a 12hr shift if that helps any

 

Just buy a cheap truck and lease on to Quality Carriers. Worse case scenario you go right back to company driver. You'll learn a ton leasing on, and with a power only lease you just have to maintain a tractor. It's not hard, just jump on in, the waters nice...

I put $4k down and financed $15. I've put an additional $5k into the truck. Rock and roll. All the other costs just come out of my settlements with a power only lease.

Baby steps. I'm just picking it up as I go along.

 

Whatever you think it's going to cost, double it. Hopefully you have good credit. Things are going to happen that you do not expect, hopefully it won't break you. I just did it, it can be done, but expect your truck in the first month or two to break. It will. Stay positive and ASK QUESTIONS. Don't rush. Whatever you think you will make, lower it. Do not rush to get c a c trucker... 08 or older, less problems. Not to say you can't get a newer truck and it won't work. Research. DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS. Seeing how you're in Cali your going to have to get a 09 or newer truck. More problems. DM if you want anymore info. Your best bet is to find a company that only hires owner ops and pay you percentage based. You don't want to compete with company trucks. There are companies out pay 2.30 a mile. Right now the fuel is cheaper than normal good time to get in, but be prepared to be stressed, bad weeks, investing your own money, crap your drivers do. To start your own authority is pretty expensive, if you don't have mad cash available it's best you drive your truck till you save up to get it. GOOD CREDIT. Unless you have rich friends or family or similar you will have to procurement your own money. So if your truck is down a week and your payment is due you don't want to get behind. Don't buy a US Express truck. I just started my own show, hired a driver and am contracted on to a company. Do not take .90 cpm. Tons of companies paying well not to do that. 15% of income for repairs. They are expensive. Just be prepared it's work to get it going. There's soo much stuff to do. But if you like a challenge then you'll be fine. Once you're in you're in. Start off driving yourself that way you can save quicker and if you have a bad week it's only you that you have to deal with. Good driver is key. Will make or break you. When you do startup get a app to record your calls. Will come in handy.
