hey guys I just brought a 1998 Western Star 4964EX. I have a question about the 13spd shiftier. I have been driving all this time in 9,10 and super 10 transmission trucks, but never a 13 and never with this small black box on the shiftier. Can someone enlighten me about this and maybe explain how to use it. I will attach a photo of the box I am talking about. By the way it has a Series 60 12.7 500 hp with 3:58 rears i will be pulling fuel tankers for now with it locally and I am 90% of the time at 80,000 and a little over. 20141218_152338.jpg

Hi TeddyG, 1st, welcome aboard, 2nd, nice truck. I had a '82 Western Star 4964, and it was a very good truck. Made money with it. That 500 Detroit is a heck of a motor. I drove a Freightliner with that setup, it had 830,000 miles and was never opened up. I've heard of million mile Detroit's. That truck had more power than anything I ever drove, even with that mileage and hardly ever had to split a gear, and still got low 7's for mileage. Good luck (btw, I never saw that cruise mounted on the stick either)

Thanks Semi Retired you don't hear of many people talking about how good the Western Star is as a truck.

Hi TeddyG, yeah, I had a lot of guys laughed at me when I bought my "Star baby". In 1988, Western Star wasn't really that big in the US. It was mostly a Canadian truck. After people saw what a good truck it was( at the time, it was mostly a White product), you started seeing more and more. A friend, whose family was a KW family for years, traded his KW for a 4964, and loved it.
