Want to become an o/o but have a unique issue...

    OK so pretty much since I can remember I have always been amazed with big trucks, and I still am to this very day. I however decided to become a paid firefighter, and have been on for the past 1-1/2. I love the job but work 24hrs on and have 48hrs off which is nice but I have all this spare time on my hands and want to start my own business. I have drove for my uncle's pallet company for the past 2 1/2-3 years, and still do but only part time now on my days off. Basically I want to be a local owner operater and still be able to be a paid firefighter. Do yall think it would be possible to buy my own truck and run freight on my two days off? I'm a dedicated dependable hard worker, and being that this would be my second job I won't need to depend on this to survive, I just want a business to pay for itself and make me a little extra money on the side. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

    The short answer is no. It's not profitable to run a truck two or three days out of seven. There is exceptions out there but very few. If you had work that ran 24/7 and put a driver in the truck and then you ran it the other two days so your driver had time off it might work. At the end of it you'd probably be just providing someone with a job and not making much if any money. Plus your drivers schedule would have to roll with yours. It'll be hard to find that work or a driver that wants that schedule.

    Yeah guess that detail would help. I live in Plant City florida just east of Tampa. I started out wanting a straight reefer truck, but the more i have looked into it, its seems like a tractor trailer is the way to go. My only concern with hauling is being home every night to work around my schedule. I would be up for just about any type of freight to get my foot in the door, as long as I'm not getting screwed over on mileage rates.

    I agree with special K. You wouldn't have enough hours to do it and there really would be no profit in it at all.

    Well that's kind of a bummer, but it is what I figured the answer would be. I even considered try to get a hot shot set up and hauling cars, but the odds don't appear to be in my favor. Maybe I can find a niche that needs to be filled but in the mean time I will try to keep looking for ways to get in and make a profit.

    My only guess would be finding something that pays hourly or doing it yourself and running in a 100 mile air radius or whatever the radius is to be exempt from using a log book.

    Friend of mine is a firefighter. Has a roll off company. Does specialty stuff and haz-cans. His brother covers the days he's at the firehouse. He does well enough. Been doing it a while, things don't start rolling overnite.

    If you go off your 70/8 you would work your 24 hr shift then mandatory 10/hours off. So you are starting your "week" 70-24= 46 Two 14 hour days at 46-28=18 then your 24hr shift... So now you need a 34 restard after that 24 hour to even get hours.... But with 48 off that would only leave you 12 hours until your next 24 hour shift


    Sorry typing this from my phone... But technically you could never really work.
