Just go on your home states web page or actually go to the DMV and find out what is required for a temp plate. You still need liability insurance. Your going to have to buy the truck first and get the title to get the temp plate and insurance. The plate you get won't be a commercial apportioned plate. It will be just a plain plate probably made of waterproof cardboard and good for 30 days. I can also be a plate that goes on your dashboard.
You do need a sign on both sides that says not for hire. No log book required or medical. Your not a commercial truck. Your just like a regular retired person who can haul a camper with nothing else required.
That's how I brought my truck home. I was looked at twice at the scales. They wanted to see my registration, CDL A license and proof of insurance and that was it. Your just a plain old person driving a truck as your personal vehicle.
How to bring truck home?

Slightly off topic, but..., can I bobtail my friends tractor from the yard to the shop if I don't have a CDL?
-
If it's on private property no CDL required. If it requires you to drive on public roads across town don't get caught.
Cetane+ Thanks this. -

Well let's put it this way.
Since I have no idea if there is any thing wrong with it and there is not any insurance and no inspection.
Stick it on a flat bed and bring it home.
It you get stop by the cops or DOT good by truck. -

So how can truck have records of being titled in 2010, but there are inspections of it in 2012 and 2013? Also, what does historical title mean??? And why the miles are exempt? This truck is 1999 with only 463k miles on it. Seller claims that truck has been used in household moving services. -
Thats when the last title was issued. So it has been owned by the same entity since 09/24/2010.

So I just did this. Bought a truck in OH and drove it home to NV. Even bobtail you're still subject to FMCSA regulations. You need to have authority to drive the truck in and out of each jurisdiction you will be traveling through. There's a few ways to do this. What I did was run on the PO's Apportioned plates and IFTA and mail them back to him when my trip was complete. The other way would be have them mail all of the title and sale paperwork to you once you've paid them. Take that to your state's DMV and get a temp moving permit. If you do this, you will need to buy trip and fuel permits for each state you enter. You will also need an active DOT number, and insurance for the truck.
