With a detroit I would guess 6+. Our 2001 with a CAT got from 5.5 to 6.4
Peterbiltt Thanks this. -
Probably average 6 - 6.5, maybe 7 with a lighter load. WS with a detroit is a great combo but it won't compete with the aero trucks in mpgs

My 1997 W Star has a 12.7 L Detroit, 15 sp, 3.73 rears, engine rebuilt at 1.3 million kms, currently has 1.9 million kms and I get 7 mpg no problem.
Don't know much about the 14 L Detroit.
I'm based in Ontario Canada so the speed limiter is set at 64 mph / 105 kph - so that actually helps with the fuel mileage and my lead foot.
Newer trucks will probably get better mpg - but no payments and cheap insurance on my truck is a good trade off. For me anyway.exhausted379 and Peterbiltt Thank this. -
I drive a 2007 Western Star 4900FA. I get 6 to 6.5 mpg. in the winter months pulling a dry van. I get 7 to 7.5 mpg. in the summer months.
My truck has a 14 liter Detroit. 10 speed. 3.58 ratio.double yellow and Peterbiltt Thank this. -

I just ran a 2007 Western Star 4900A with a Mercedes 4200* engine, when I set cruise I was lucky to get 6, I saw an average of 4.8-5.4mpg FTL even less on the passes ... The truck had 510k on it and the motor was brand new from the dealer with 120k on the motor... EGR Cooler and radiator blew in the 1st 2 trips after it went OTR... nice and comfy truck and flashy if has the chrome package but it's a pig on the mountains
