Hi truckersreport, I'm new to the forum. Thanks for having me.

I have been in sales most of my career and I plan on doing that with trucking and for the past several months Ive been working in different areas in the industry to learn it better. I have to know what I'm selling right?!

Ok so Im helping a small fleet owner choose some trucks. I was asked to help because man I pick info up fast. Well and I'm just providing the main guy working on this with extra research. Ive researched a lot already, I know about emission problems and new technology causing problems in newer trucks. I know to stay away from "Lackforce" engines and so on. Here is where I am at

    • Need 3 trucks that will run in California soon, 2 day cabbies, 1 sleeper
    • Probably going to go with Cascadias with DD engines based on forum research
    • Budget of up to 200,000 so as many trucks as possible but obviously they need to be good choices. Well 200,000 assuming he can get a loan that big!
    • Cant do anything older than 2007 because that would have a 06 engine and CARB requires a freak filter in those.
    • Reading that 2010s and 2011s could be a risky investment? Which year is more prone to big problems?
    • Should we consider 2007 to 2009 trucks. Any advice?
    • Should we try the 2010 and 2011s or are 2012s and 13s a much better bet?
    • Should APUs definitely be run on any sleeper or is that just for some model years? Im not talking MPG, Im talking more about idling tied to new emission tech problems.

Now here's the real interesting part. Penske offered 3 2011 manuals with 350,000 or so miles for about $60,000 each shipped across the country. commercialtrucktrader says 2012s with similar miles go for $71-73,000 plus what 2k in shipping each right. I cant really find many 2013 day cabs...

Is the $15,000 jump because Penske is trying to move units or is this how much trucks normally depreciate?

I really appreciate the help guys. I apologize for all the questions but I am excited and want to do this right :)

Most companies are on a 3 year trade in cycle is why you can't find 13's. They're probably trying to make a deal since you're buying 3 at once. Check prices in truckpaper.com also. I'd go with '11 and up DPF + EGR + SCR emissions and avoid the trouble prone '08-'10 DPF +EGR altogether as those are considered lemon years.

I saw some figures once and every year has been less problems, with 2013 trucks having noticeably less than 2012s and 2011s.

We idle as needed with a sleeper and other than some warning lights coming on at times(and going back off later on their own, usually) I haven't had much trouble.

Most of the 2012s we lease have had issues, some to the point where they were left somewhere to be fixed and the driver got a loaner.

The 2013s have been able to get to a shop under their own power, unless they have had a unavoidable accident with a deer. Only time the one I drive has been towed.

Money wise, that is being reflected, the newer trucks are holding their value noticeably better than the older ones. So you aren't going to get 3 2013s for 200k, unless they are very high miles. I'm not sure when they started putting the DD13s in , but they are lighter, and some companies hauling bulk prefer them for that reason. I doubt you would get 3 2012s for that much, either.

Values and resale vary somewhat depending on availability in a given area, so it's possible Penske is needing to move some units out to get them sold. I see stacks of used being moved quite often in my travels. The $15 K difference is also part depreciation. They might be at a point where some maintenance is close to being advised, as well.

The problem with buying so called good well maintained fleet trucks is after buying the truck some if not all of them have been damaged or shorted out by company mechanics that have no idea how to tie their shoes let alone work on trucks. So with that being said make sure you pull out all the engine/truck codes before signing any papers. If you are buying a used truck with automatic trans. you better have mechanical coverage on the trany or get ready to spend a bundle on it. and if you have a driver on that truck get ready to loose him/her too.Automatics are only good for 300k after that all HELL brake loose because of the corrosion and heat
& the system electronics age.Fleet trucks are designed to do just that.Make money for the big boys when they are under warranty when they are NEW and make money for freight liner/KW/Pete/IH when the warranty expires and you sir are left with the decision to stay or not in the trucking business. Most likely "NOT" unless you win the LOTTO 10/10 Hello Come in

i have a 12 FL with dd15 and approaching 400k miles. i'll be glad to see it go by by for the new truck on it's way. as it's starting to break down quite frequently.

i got the truck at 200k. at the 315k mark is when it falls apart. last week it had a egr valve controller. this week it's back for 5 egr codes.

A better choice would be Cascadia with Cummins ISX. They are hard to find tho because Freightliner is pushing the DD15 sales. DD15 BTW is a Mercedes engine. I drove a Cascadia with DD15 and I wasn't very impressed. Fuel mileage was not great and the engine felt gutless. My friend runs Cascadia with ISX to California no major issues and gets 7mpg in the summer pulling refer.

Thank you, that was helpful. I looked up truckpaper recently and still not many 2013 day cabs. When do you think these will be on the market? Spring or summer?

Do you think the fleet maintained "run them to the ground" use and bad mechanic work also goes for day cabs? I would guess there would be less issues with day cabs since they normally arent run nearly as often as sleepers and of course, idled much less so requiring less mechanic hands? Thanks for the help

Wow, sorry to hear abut the troubles. You mind if I ask how much you paid for it? Also, Im guessing it is a sleeper. do you idle it or do you use an APU? And what truck are you getting my friend? That's the good part here right?
