He's running it on a saturday, the GW bridge won't be that busy, it'll prolly be fine. the tappanzee route is much nicer but tacks on 30 minutes and is cheaper, taking 95 is quicker but ugly and bumpy (but is better than it used to be, and don't get freaked out by the height clearance signs as per another thread recently, just stay in the middle lane). If you're tight on time, take the GW, if you're not take the tappanzee. 87 vs 95 I don't have a preference for as you're doing the GW either way. Regardless, when you're in jersey stop and check the traffic report as an accident on either route can simplify the decision. In the end it's not too big of a difference either way. If you take the tappanzee, really consult the map first and develop a good understanding, if you don't go through there often the signs can be weird and it's not hard to take a wrong turn by accident.

Unless I'm going to southern CT, I stay away from the Tappan zee and GWB and go across 84. However, I have a HUT sticker. If I was trying to slip through, I'd go over the GWB. I got popped for $100+ at the Preble scale for no HUT sticker about 10 years ago in a new truck, even though I had a valid account. I imagine the fine is a bit larger these days.

I may have to make several trips from southern VA to NH area soon and have been studying maps, travel times and road conditions.
I'm asking for your experience. What do you think of taking I70 to Hagarstown (instead of 15 N into PA)... I81 north to Scranton... I84 east from there?
According to MapQuest, what I describe is 17 miles longer. I've never driven it. It avoids NYC.

    --------
Separate question. If you had to drive from Raleigh, NC to New York (Bronx, Brooklyn, Long Island), how much surcharge would you charge, and what route would you take?

    1) sounds like a good route.
    2) Honestly, I would charge at least $800 on top of my normal figured rate for going onto the island. You have $180 minimum extra tolls, and the long traffic times.

When going to NE, I've always sought to take 81 to 84 to whatever I needed. It knocked out NYC, DC, Philly, and all the other BS 95 brought. At most, it was 40 miles extra, as I've run it.

    you can 95 to x133 in va, 17n to 66 to 340/522 to 81 to 84

or you can 95 to York PA, 33 to 222 to 78 to 287 to tappan zee (or 684)

    couple of other ways too

84 is a good run from Scranton all the way to Mass Pike. Better than messing with 95 IMO.

81 through Scranton/Wilkes Barre is a bit of a poop show with construction last I remember but nothing too awful.
