Hi everyone. Before I start heres a little about me. Im a FireFighter and love my job, but like most I had a second job and then had a kid. Since then my wife and I have been trying to find a way to give her more time at being home and still have the same income. We have both stop working our second job in order to be home and really because we want to be here for our kid and not have someone else see him grow, talk etc.... So we got to thinking and talking to my mother and step father (which is a truck driver and has been one for about 10-15 yrs) and they brought up the point about us looking into buying a truck and getting a driver to generate some income. We have taken the steps of finding a company that would provide the loads (at 20% of the load cost), we've gotten the company reg with the state, but now we are in need of a driver. How can I go about finding one with breaking the bank on posting on monster.com at $400 or some other site? Thanks for any and all input on this matter.

Many truck owners make a small or no profit on 2nd truck in areas that are more profitable than Florida .. 80% of cheap loads outta Florida can be hard to break even on .. Unless the company you want to work for has good freight your fire fighting job may need to support the truck

Uhm...$400 will "break the bank" ? How will you handle an OTR unit burning $800 plus dollars a day in fuel ? Carrier deduct? What happens when you need $5000 worth of repairs 1000 miles from the house? Carrier is going to tell you 4Q's buddy unless it's saved in escrow or owed to you. He won't loan you that much....he will just get another truck and wish you luck. It's that simple.

Not trying to be negative here but it sure looks like a recipe for financial disaster.....but if your determined then ask the step father to find you one. Plenty out there for the right pay. Good luck.

How do you find a good driver? It's real simple, actually. Go to a truckstop and look for a company driver that's happy where he's at. He's wearing company swag, likes his paycheck and his dispatcher. Odds are he's a good driver. Hard part is, if he's satisfied, you're going to have to sell him on your gig.

Its really hard finding a good driver that's looking for work. You will hear drivers say that they are good drivers, but they hate everyone, from other drivers to office personnel. Do you really want to wipe another grown man's posterior?

See, there's so much more to being a good driver than just being able to navigate a truck and not hit anything. If he's crude to women, your wife is going to hate him and hate you. If he's hotheaded, you're going to have run -ins with shippers are receivers, law enforcement and other motorist...how's that for breaking the bank? If he's dishonest or lazy, he's going to drive you broke.

How can you tell he's a good driver? He's satisfied where he's at.
