Cost of ownership can vary, but generally, I would say Freightliners with Detroit engines and manual transmissions (no automated or automatics) should be the least expensive to maintain.

Every other truck (other than yours) is reported as less expensive/cheaper to maintain/run...

Spot on there RSQ20, and don't forget thy can also rebuild there own motors, tranies,and rear ends on a lazy Sunday afternoon and get another 1mpg or 2 out of it.

I don't believe there is one truck that provide those benefits. If there there was, we'd all be driving one. Most. Remember, many fuel economy benefits result from the driver knowing his/her rig, the sweet spots, shift points, types of load and road conditions, and driving for economy. If you push your rig, you'll wear things out faster and buy more fuel. Easy. Want economy? Take it easy.

You never know the cost to own a truck until you sell it,,Many drivers only look at the initial cost when they buy,,you must look at the end when you sell it too.. When you look at the same basic spec's Peterbilt and Kenworth are your best value,, does not do you any good to own a truck that you can't sell quickly or for a good price,,
I bought a new 98 Pete,,in 10 years over a million miles,,one in frame,,replaced the rears and rebuilt the trans once, including all maintenance and payments including the interest on the load the truck cost me after selling it $700/mo to own.
A friend bought a new freightliner spec'd about the same for $5K less than I paid for my Pete,,I got $30K when I sold me Pete,,he got $5K when he sold his,,

All depends on the fella doing the maintenance.
I have a couple of guys that live close by that do most of my work cheap. That means I can buy and older truck and replace stuff. Plus we do alot of stuff ourselves.
Back in 2007 we paid $18,000 for a T800 with an M11. It was in real nice shape. Have done an in frame, turbo, 2 leaf springs, CAC, rad, front rear diff and some normal wear parts. It's still in really good shape.
With all of the emissions problems these days I bet I could get $18,000 for this pre-EGR truck today. -
