Defenitely not the tampered one without def. Doesn't do the dpf any good since it was designed to use def could cost you downtime.

With DEF!!! I don't know your budget but I'd buy a DEF truck 2012 or newer, they had updates to the engines in 2013 and the after treatment systems. They seem to be more reliable, I'd stay away from 08-11 none def.

Sorry forgot about the why, the DEF helps the truck not have to re-gen as often, runs cooler exhaust temps, little less EGR. All that equals less heat, turbo's and EGR coolers last longer. Also equals better MPG.

Actually the DPF and DEF are 2 different systems.

The way I read it is the DPF over burns the soot (Think catalytic converter,.. sort of) and the DEF neutralizes/minimizes the carbon dioxide levels. Both can function with or with out the other.

For me,.. the most problems have been with the DPF as when they have problems they will shut the truck off. The DEF can be manipulated with simple tap water. Though I read a post where the newer trucks now actually read the quality of DEF in the tank. So I dont think the water trick will work on the newer 2014+ trucks.

Just a tip on if you go with the truck with DEF. Make sure you know when the DPF was cleaned last prior to purchasing the truck. This doesn't mean asking billy bob and taking his word for it. Make sure he has proof. It will save you a pretty penny if it was done, done correctly, and done on time.

Your not missing much. Its like anything else out there. The more they add to something, the more that can/will go wrong with it.

I think they are getting better. But still read a lot of complaints from drivers and owners.
