Comments period is over for the proposed insurance increase mandate. Article attached says only 2,000 comments. I read the first few hundred-one in ten was against it, all the rest were lawyers making wild claims and amateur citizens believing some hyped up version of how it will positively impact safety on the road.

I commented-did you? Don't tell me how you were too busy making $1.xx a mile to feed your family you couldn't see the bigger picture and how it will impact your life and livelihood.

I made more than one comment on the website. I read where congress may intervene to stop any forced increase in insurance. If they are successful in raising coverage requirements, you can bet that thousands of independents and small fleets will close their doors. They won't be able to afford the premiums.

I hear as many people cry about the cost of insurance as fuel, I'm not going to lie I don't care about the cost of either of them because both are needed to operate, people say o my insurance is going to double that's not tru I added 1/million last year for $580/year so now I have 2/million in General liability people make big deals out of nonsense

You are talking about general liability. The increase is for auto liability. You won't add $1 million in auto liability for $580/year. Whatever you are paying for your auto liability you will need to double or triple the rate to likely come close to the actual cost, should this be implemented. Whether you run your own authority, lease to a carrier or drive for a company, this will impact everyone. It will effect the independent and small fleets most, but everyone will feel the repercussions should this pass. I have no doubt that many comments came from lawyers. They stand to benefit the most from any increase in insurance coverage. The comments from individuals outside of this industry could have been set up from these same lawyers. If you think this will not have a major impact on your business, give your insurance agent a call and ask him to give you a quote on having $4.2 million of auto liability insurance and see what he quotes. That is the amount originally proposed by the ATA and special interest groups (trial lawyers). When 99% of all claims fall short of the current minimum of $750,000, there is no need for any increase in premium. Laws and regulations should only be implemented when there is a PROVEN need for those regulations. Increasing coverage and premiums will NOT improve safety. Higher coverage has nothing to do with safety. It has to do with greed. If the proposed increase is implemented, you will see thousands of owners go out of business. They won't be able to afford the premiums.

Reading the comments section it was clear many of the "private citizen" comments were boilerplate cut and paste.

I realize that that my prices will increase with an increase in my cost: however that initial impact of a much larger balance due on my insurance certainly won't be positive & it's certainly likely that some of my customers will balk at a significant increase in transportation costs; regardless of the reason behind the increase.

Sad but kind of the results I figured it would get. Both me and my father sent in comments almost exactly stating what GMAN said. As usual it looks like the power of money will win.

There is no way in heck that anybody who actually MAKES the rules reads those comments. The only thing they read are the zeros on the checks that get those laws, rules, and regulations passed.

"Public Comment" on this or any legislation is pure window dressing at this time. Even when comments are 10 to 1 against, the justifications will be made that they were computer generated, or not affected individuals or some such rubbish. This is not 1820 Keene NH when you had a public meeting at the town hall and the male landowners were the only ones who were allowed to comment because they were the only ones who were allowed to vote. Unelected bureaucrats control all of that now.
This is a perversion of the original representative democracy that is talked about in high school history lessons. Legislation is moved forward by money now, it is far more effective to purchase representation by belonging to a group(OOIDA, Small Truck Fleets etc) and give them money to make your point.

Any new rules or regulations should be under the control of congress. Only congress is supposed to make laws. Whether you call them regulations or laws, they are laws. No government agency should be allowed to make rules without the approval of congress.
