It is April of 1976. I have been an owner-operator for about 60 days. I purchased a used 1974 White Road Commander Cabover single axle spring ride 250 Cummins 10 speed from northAmerican Van Lines for $25,600 with 124,000 miles on it. Payment for the truck was $563 month License plates were $450 year. The paperwork I am about to drop in the dumpster now yields the following information:

Typical numbers for a load in the division I was in, New Products. The tractor had a wheelbase of 136" and I was pulling a 40' air ride trailer.

I hauled a load of kitchen ranges for Tappan from Mansfield OH to Lincoln NE with an extra stop in Omaha NE. I deadheaded 77 miles from Cleveland OH to get it.
I was paid $345($.40 a mile) for the 800 loaded miles including extra stop pay and $19.25 deadhead mileage for a total revenue of $364.25

Along the way I purchased 100 gallons of fuel at Iowa 80 Truckstop, Walcott IA. It was $.49 9/10 per gallon
I purchased a fuel filter at Sapp Bros in Omaha for $5.90(which I installed in the parking lot).
Apparently I was in the mood to live large. I stayed overnight at a Motel 6 in Lincoln NE at the end of the trip for $12.22
I had to mount a temporary set of mudflaps on the tractor in order to bobtail around that day, 2 flaps cost $10.23 at a local NAPA dealer. They gave me the 2x4 and some nails that I used.

My wife at the time traveled with me continuously, 2 of us sharing a 32" wide bunk flat top sleeper( sleeping sardine style). Maybe thats why I sprung for the motel.

Just thought you might like to compare any of your own numbers. Would I do it all over again? Probably.

Ya can't beat the unintended humor in nostalgia and 'the way things used to be'.

I found it extra funny you had to do every mile in a spring ride cabover... while the freight got better comfort in an air ride 40'er. ;)

Compared to the buying power of todays $ your #s would be

Your truck payment $2,345.83 / Month , the Fuel filter $24.58 , Mud flaps $42.23 and Fuel $2.08 / Gallon and you would get $1.67 / mile for the 800 loaded miles

In other words, dollar-for-dollar everything is substantially cheaper today except fuel.

Contrary to popular belief, I believe there might be some truth in that. I haven't got hard and fast paper to back it up, but a few old timers have told me their early '80's 359 Peterbilts were in the $80,000 range. That's "free" trade for ya. Is it any wonder wages are stagnant?

I'd like to know what Studebacker's truck cost. Not just the payment.

Huh, $.40 a mile, funny, that's what car brokers think they can still book a car to be moved for......

In 1976 I bought a new Chevy C-65 gas job. 427 with a 5&2 speed rear end. I had a 5th wheel and tag axle added. I think I had $12-14K in the truck. The tire guy had a Great Dane 40' spread on a Hutch mechanical suspension. He put me on the payment plan. Signed on with Globe Trucking out of Toledo,Oh. Most of the time we loaded at J and L Steel in the Cleveland flats. Home depot is there now. I would put a 40K in the nose and a 40K over the spread. Go home sleep till midnight get in the truck, go to Toledo Pickling. Once in a while we would get a return load out of Toledo. The rate at that time was .$46/00, $368.00 on 80K. Plus we were Teamsters on the 2 check system. Our driver employee check was 26% of the gross and the truck ck. was 49% of the gross. On top of that Globe paid our Health and Welfare. Health Ins. and contributions to the Teamsters Central States Pension Fund. How sweet it was.

That was for a White Cabover not a Studebaker.
