Let's say you have to pickup 10 pallets in Newark, then pickup 10 pallets in Dallas, to deliver everything in New Orleans.
Newark -> Dallas, 1500 miles, $1.50/mile
Dallas -> New Orleans, 500 miles, $1.75/mile
What is the correct rate for this trip?
Would it be? 1500*1.50 + 500*1.75 = $3125

That $1.50/mile seems low to me, but the only thing I have to compare to is what I do-which is furn. & electronics.
If it was me, I would look for something else to put on the trailer to Dallas, drop it and then pick up your other 10 to N.O.
Unless your 10 pallets are really light going to Dallas and you can get real good fuel mileage-then not have to worry about it. See if you can squeeze another $500 out of shipper/broker. -
Sometimes you get lucky. I got a load from a broker that said 20 pallets at 25,000lbs. We agreed on a rate, when I went to pick up-the pallets were double stacked. So they only took the space of 10 pallets, but the weight was wrong also. It only weighed 2500lbs.
Turns out this was a styrofoam co that was shipping giant bags of popcorn peanuts on pallets, so each pallet weighed 125lbs including the pallet!! Wish I got more loads like that!! -
At those rates the best ideas would be to 1) lease on with Swift on their flat mileage rate program, because you will make more money. 2) Leave it on the dock and look for something better because you can go just as broke sitting as you can working at it. That's how I would rate it.
SL3406, Cetane+, HalpinUout and 4 others Thank this. -
Your trip has an extra stop in Dallas ($100 extra stop) which also adds 750 miles (2050 total). 2050 x $1.57 + $100 = $3318.5, so I'd expect the "market rate" to be $3325 -
If you give credence to their lane data, which I don't, a further question remains is why empty out in a total dead hole like New Orleans on a rate like that? Texas is bad enough.
-
Personally I wouldn't empty out in New Jersey unless I got paid well enough going in to deadhead to Ohio...
-
Me neither. If OP is a wannabe maybe that gives him something to think about. If he's a troll, well it's kinda slow anyways.
-
2050 total miles x rate per mile + stopoff charge.
I don't understand where the rates come from that have been suggested. I guess running long miles means your cost per mile is lower...but wow.Cetane+ Thanks this. -
im glad ur not hauling melons; (your opinion) then rates would be hit out of your ball park.
