Hello guys, I am new to this forum because I have not been able to find much information pertaining to my exact circumstance. I am a DJ business owner in Northern Michigan and I have a 1998 international 4700 24ft box truck. I have under 24000 GVW plates on it and a DOT number it has hydrolic brakes and I have no CDL. I do not ever drive farther than 150 air mile radius and I am the only driver ever. My questions are do I need to keep a log book? Do I need a yearly inspection? Am I supposed to stop at weigh stations? Do I need a medical checkup for myself? I also modified the box so one side opens up as a stage it is very strong as I reinforced the entire box with square tube steel. What kind of problems would I face if I got pulled over and a cop or weigh master seen my modified box? I know I have a ton of questions so thank you guys in advance for pointing me in the right direction.

It has been over 10 years since I drove a local straight truck so my memory may be a bit hazy, but to the best of my recollection:

Double Yellow is mostly correct, but since you do not require a cdl for your truck you have a 150 mile radius exemption from the log book meaning you will just need time records at the office (can be as simple as a page with start and stop times). Yes, you do need a DOT medical card, annual inspection, driver qualification file, your DOT number should indicate not for hire so they don't go looking for a MC (motor carrier) number when you are at the weigh station. Also, carry paperwork indicating you own the equipment in the box, something as simple as a note on your letterhead, just something to act as a bill of lading in case you are ever asked. Michigan may have some other intrastate requirements if you never leave the state, check with the MPSC. As for the stage modification, so long as you have not made the truck any wider or removed any of the required lighting/safety devices then they will not care.
double yellow Thanks this. -
Thanks for the replys guys! I made sure my DOT number didn't list me as a motor carrier. So my calender saying when a gig starts and ends should qualify as my personal time sheet? Where do I go to get my Medical card and a vehicle inspection? Thanks.

Edit: They now have to be certified to give dot physicals. Just remembered that. -

Thanks for the answers. I am using such a big truck because I have a ton of equipment for DJing and live sound but mostly because of the mobile stage I built the box into. The 4ft high deck makes a great stage height. It sounds like I can get the medical card pretty easy so I might as well get that. I will try to contact my local authorities and get a clarification on the inspection. Heres a pick for reference.

I would get the inspection as well, a Federal annual DOT inspection is only about $75-$100 dollars at most truck shops, and it will give you peace of mind that the truck will pass a roadside inspection.

Thanks guys I just want to follow up so everyone knows the answers to my questions. I called a michigan based trucker website http://www.truckingsafety.org/ and they had all the answers. A recent law change in Michigan changes everything for people like me Public Act 231
http://www.truckingsafety.org/Resou...e/ArticleView/articleId/6/Public-Act-231.aspx
The new law states that non Motor Carriers within state lines under 26,000 GVW no longer need a DOT number, log books, or inspections. I do need the medical card tho because it is over 10,000 GVW and I do need to stop at weigh stations. They also said I can have my signs on the side and I do not need "not for hire" signs.
