Assuming everything is to code with hours of service, what is the range of hours that most drivers would run in a day? 400-700? 500-600? What do you guys think?

Trying to estimate how long it should take a trip if you know the total mileage.

I usually shoot for 600 miles per day hours permitting. Though I've done a little over 700 in a 65 mph truck on elogs. But literally the planet's have to allign to do that.

670 to 680 in an 11 hour shift in a 65 mph truck on elogs is more than doable.

Ungoverned, you can easily go from Phoenix to San Antonio in a 24 hour period (~1000 miles), but that would not be typical elsewhere.

Unless I knew conditions were good, I wouldn't plan more than 500 in a shift (650 in a 24-hour period)

    Estimating trip time:
If you have previous logs take the miles driven and divide by number of hours driven. That will give you your average miles per hour.

If you don't have old logs, take the speed you plan to run at and subtract 3-5 mph depending on how much and how long you stop.

Take the average miles per hour and divide into your trip miles. Add 30 minutes for your DOT break, 30 more for any planned fueling, and add 30 minutes for Murphy's Law.

Adjust your time for things like traffic, pulling mountains, etc.

Then add it all up. That will give you a pretty close estimate.

I push myself as hard as I can. I try to get upper 600's to over 700 when I can. Terrain, traffic, weather, load, shippers etc often dont allow that to happen. I beat myself up when I cant get at least 700mi in on a good day. With that said,.. make no mistake,.. I have had times where 500 - 550 was all I made that day.

I am anal about trip planning. I know where I should be, when I should be there and where I will fuel and then where I should be to find a place to park in time to have a parking space. Time management is 90% of a drivers business.

As a new driver, It can be difficult to know where and how things will be. With experience you will learn the best routes and short cuts for trucks when things dont go as planned.

Usually a number between 500-600 will be a good average. However. Lots of things impact your planning. Road conditions, weather, GVW, mountains or flat, the fuel budget on this trip, where to take your break, traffic expectations, so on. One of the big things, for me, is my 70hr clock. I like to run on the recap, so 9-91/2 hrs/day is a good average. Also, if you run a straight 8hrs without stopping, some trips you can avoid your Obama break and still get in pretty decent miles/day. Like Miss Elvie, I use my average speed to plan, quite a bit. Average speed depends almost entirely on how many times you stop in a day. Last planning item for me is traffic congestion. You won't make much money or miles sitting in big city traffic congestion. So I'll set out at 01:00, or so, to get thru Houston/Dallas/Chicago/Twin Cities before 06:00, cruise right thru at 65. LA - by 06:00 it's already too late.

650 miles a day is my target and maybe 95% i hit it, but it require planning and discipline.
