Open delivery loads

    Curious if there are loads that O/O's can for example drop and hook on a "when you get it there" basis? That probably sounds crazy but I have a serious problem sleeping in the day then loading at 8 and driving all night. I dont mind driving until 1 or 2 AM or starting my day at 3am but that overnight schedule kills me. That was one of my biggest gripes with Transport America. We did lots of FedEX and they were the worst hours with litteraly minutes to spare for delivery time.

    All my loads are drop and hook when I get there. Never a time crunch for me.

    Some of my flatbed loads at Mercer just say between 8 and 2 o'clock.

    for 28 years running under my own authority and choosing when, where, what and how much I hauled for it was no problem, Ther were times when a shipper or broker told me a specified time to deliver and I always told them I would do my best. I too am one that can not get a good rest driving most of the night and sleeping during the day.. I am good 6AM till midnight but after that I hit the bunk.
    1n 1999 I switched to hauling oversize,most state only allow day light driving and it suited me fine,
    Back in the late 70's or early 80's the Baltimore City Police did a study with Johns Hopkins University about shift changes and work,,They concluded that switching form day shift to night shift took a person 3 weeks to adjust to the new hours, SInce then they have had a work schedule program where their officers either work day or night all the time,,they gave their officers a choice .

    It is just not reasonable to expect someone to switch cycle and be a top performer.
    Some peoples prefer night some others day shift, but playing on both is totally unhealthy.

    I remember delivering once in Laredo. Probably 110 degrees in the Truck Stop parking lot. Reciever wouldnt take me until 7:00am so I slept all night no problem. Then my Dispatcher said can get you out until 7 tonight with a reefer load up to Chicago. So the opti idle sucked on my first FFE truck and I couldnt keep it below like 85 in the truck. Killed me. Couldnt sleep at all so get loaded and head out. What a horrible drive. I was on that schedule for like 3 loads. Hate it!

    Best part of running a flat bed. Banker hours. I can not remember the last time I had either a pick up, or a delivery, outside normal working hours.

    Totally agree I haul steel and always open time from usually 7-3:30 and first come, first to get unloaded

    I don't get it. If you don't like the load and unload times don't book the load. You could always ask the broker push back load and unload times. Just make sure the new times discussed are in the rate confirmation.
