Well, we had some bad news this weekend. At least one injector ring went out in the truck and leaked diesel into the cooling system, which basically starts a whole mess of problems. So, we are looking at a complete overhaul, on the motor. Good thing is, we were prepared. :biggrin_25525:

So guess who's home this week?

If you don't mind me asking what type of engine, year and model. Also what the cost is/was for the in-frame.

Nope don't mind at all. Its a 2001 Cummins N14. Estimated in frame is $13 - $15K. Its still in the shop. We caught it in time so the pistons were still good.

A former truck I had had that injector O ring problem. Just over 700,000 it needed an inframe.

Hmmmmmm same motor? Just wondering? We are hearing that this is common for that motor around 750-800 thousand.

Sad thing is, He did just fine in the mountains. Was glowing about how well the truck went through there. <sigh>

    Mine was a CAT.

CATs and Cummins with good care and problems like this caught soon enough can and should last well over 1 million.

The only indication that we had that there was a problem was that the coolant was running out of the over flow on the radiator.

The mechanic told us that the injector rings in these motors are copper, and known to do this at about 700 - 800K. :biggrin_2555:

We have only put about 50,000 miles on the truck since we got it. You think this was an issue before we bought it?

    DragginMan Thanks this.

I would be interested in what the ECM records say about the engine mine showed a problem but not enough to cause a fault code, so they said. The N-14 is notorious for this issue even with excellent care. I'd contact Cummins main office, find out who the sales rep is in that area and explain the situation and see if he won't work with you and get that rate down. I had the same issue and they did what they called at the time a "Good Will" price adjustment and the in frame only cost me the labor which was $5000.000 2 yrs ago. Not all of them will do it and they might not even do it any more. There's another issue with that engine which is the belt pulleys. Some tighten it too much and it causes premature wear in the bearings on the pulleys and then you have MORE headaches.
