Truck "Getting your own contracts" update

Hope someone can help me with this...

My husband has a 26' straight box truck and is delivering for various courier companies in Georgia. We are now ready to venture out and try to get some business of our own,,,,we have a couple of small companies in mind that we want to target BUT.......I have no clue were to even start
..

How do we quote a price (by the mile, point A to B, etc)?
Who do I contact at the companies (when I make the initial call)?
What are the terms of the contract?
Are there standard contracts to use, etc.

We are very new to the trucking industry and just "getting our feet wet". I feel safer asking the people on this board for help versus some of the people we have been meeting in the industry (not sure if they have our best interest at heart).

ANY help would greatly appreciate!

you are completely lost it seems... if your in atlanta they're is a company there that you can lease onto and do home deliveries with your 26ft'er... you'll be delivering appliances and such for major retailers... it's less money then getting your own contracts... but it takes the guess work out of it

You need to to do a cost analysis of your business.
How much do you pay for a mortgage on your truck?
Insurance
Maintenance
License
Permits
registration
fuel
advertisement (you can never have too many customers)
Then you need to figure out the cost per mile gross and from there you'll get a pretty good idea what to charge based on what is your minimum cost.

Some of us can run on $1 PM (net, not gross) and some need more or less depending on what their expense ratio/profit margins might be.
