Have any of you guys ever hauled AAFES loads? A small local company who has a direct contract with AAFES approached me with a need for trucks. He offered to let me lease some of my trucks to his authority to haul exclusively AAFES loads on AAFES trailers at a rate of pay of 90% of gross. When I asked him what types of rate these loads pay he said "very well" and that he would stop back in a few days with invoices and such showing exactly what they pay.
So in the meantime, I'm trying to do some research as to what to expect when hauling this govt. stuff so that I can make an informed decision. It is the slow season for the niche that I serve, so I could free up 2 or 3 trucks to do this deal for awhile if it proved worthwhile. Any first hand insights or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Are you talking about amunitions and explosives type loads? I know the have to be team because someone HAS to be on the truck at all times. I also k now they rates are high but they have been coming down due to the same undercutting we see everywhere.
Ladnstar has a division that hauls them. I know they cut there rates this year in order to keep there volume up... nothing like looking out for the investors over the drivers. the rates are still good but there is alot of headache. -
AAFES - Army Air Force Exchange Service.. It's the military answer to a department store. Basically it's consumer goods being hauled to the military installations.

Broker will tell you $1.30 is a "very good" rate
-
If the rate is good I would haul the freight but tell him that your authority is working out JUST FINE for you right now and you don't see a need to sublet! -
Thats usually referred to as AA&E.
Ammunitions, Arms, & Explosives I THINK is what that stands for. -
I wasn't sure it was some other form of it or something. I'm not that familiar with it.
I don't think I'd lease exclusively to the guy if I already had a good business going. the whole eggs in one basket thing ya know -
There is an AAFES warehouse in Waco, Tx that had a few brokers looking for 'power only' operators last year, to pull their trailers round-trip. If I recall correctly, they paid 82cpm plus a FSC of 31cpm, at the time the FSC should have been .45cpm. Plus they paid HHG short miles.
It could have been the broker trying to make a mint on each load, but I told him I couldn"t afford to run for that little bit of money. He was also trying to get lease tractors to sign up. They may be offering more now, I just don't know. -
He stopped back in the shop today and dropped off a stack of invoices from the last two weeks with my wife(I'm on the road)and she is going to scan and email them to me. From what she was reading of them to me, I would call the rate good...but not outstanding.
And BTW, for theguy who made the comment about it pays .82 plus fuel through a broker....If the broker could move it for that, he is getting RICH. It pays about 3 times that much. -
eskimo...for that id drag a van for ya!!
affes only goes to military bases....less traffic, big roads ( designed for tanks after all....ever drivin one?? they have BIG blind spots...lol)
if it works for ya i say why not.
heck i wouldnt mind hualing a trailer that says " serving the best customers in the world" and knowing it is for military affliated folks at all
my take? look at it ...if it is a profitable situation, do it.....if not walk away
