Many of the regulars here know that I recently added a www.ponypack.com APU to my truck.

They are a small company in Abq NM O/O by a former truck O/O. His goal is to make a relatively easy to install and maintain unit for the O/O trucking market and others who wish to use one. All the maintenance and most of the major operating components are easily changed. AC compressor, alternator, idler pulley, fuel filter and belts are bought at any auto parts store. The engine is a 2 cylinder Kubota engine.

If you are a better mechanic than I am you could probably install the whole thing by yourself. They provide a detailed install guide with pics. In my case I paid my neighbor to install it and I was the helper. Tech support is only a phone call away and was always helpful the couple times I had to call with questions.

Purchase price, installation, heater and AC hoses etc for installation, and AC charge probably ran me right at $9000. I haven't added it up exactly yet.

It is very easy to use and operate. I haven't had a chance to use it for heating (being summer) and my experience with it at 94 degrees in Abq last week shows that the interior stays VERY comfortable.

The exhaust is louder than I personally like and will be actively searching for a quieter muffler.

personally I'd plumb the exhaust into your truck muffler so it goes up an doout the stacks. probably wouldn't even hear it

That would take more work. Haven't you figured out yet I'm just a lazy truck driver?:biggrin_25523:
On the W9 the exhaust isn't as far back as say Bronc's truck where it would be real easy to plumb into the system.

4 big frame bolts put on with an impact wrench. It could be done, but would take some doing.

baack.. are you talking bout steeling my idea or his pony pack?? lol

I'm not sure if the back pressure flowing into the unit when the truck is running would be a problem or not but what you could do is buy a hotrod electric exhaust diverter valve like you would use to switch between mufflers and open headers. weld a pipe to your elbow going into the muffler then put the valve on and run the pip to the unit.

I had thought of the exhaust pressure from the big engine.

I'm thinking a TriPac muffler is going to be a lot less work. :biggrin_2559:

but is the tripac quite because of the muffler or the motor? I don'tknow what motor they use. I agree the tripac is nice and quiet.

Does the pony pack have an ac generator? I'm half tempted to mount a roof heat/ac unit on the bunk and build a diesel gen set and hang it on the frame like that. my bunk HVAC unit has seen better days. the ac works if I hotwire the switchs, the heater hoses are not hooked up and I don't know if the core leaks.

PP uses a 110A Ford alternator. I've got an inverter from before I installed the PP.

Does the AC in your bunk now only work with the pony pack? or will it still un of the truck too? if it will run off the truck I'm trying to figure out how it is plumbed to work both ways

    Cab and bunk both.

There is a shunt valve at the AC drier can. Where ever the pressure comes from the other compressor doesn't get any back pressure. Its wired so that only one compressor gets power at a time.
