lying brokers-Good or bad idea?

Just started my own small trucking company. Lately brokers have been telling us a weight on a load but when we pick it up the load is up to 3,000 pounds heavier then stated on the rate confirmation. I have been thinking about having the broker sign something saying that they will pay us $50 for every 1000 pounds that the load is over the stated weight. I would give them a 1000 pounds free then after that start charging. Is this a good or bad idea? Would they sign it?

LOL no they wont sign it, they will just find some other guy to haul it. You will never get accurate weights out of a broker, all they care about is making money.... Half the time the shipper will tell you the wrong weight or sometimes you have to figure in pallet weight which is around 1500-2000lbs depending on load.

Well I am going to tell you one story.. The truck I was driving could max haul 43,600 Lbs, trailer was a reefer and that was it.. Broker said the load was going to be 43,000 (no pallets on the floor) I get there and it is pretty much in the middle of nowhere (state was FL) Picked it up and checked for the closet scale, it was a few hours away before I could get to a scale... I figured it was going to be heaver then 43,000 Lbs just because I have been in this situation before (companies out in the middle of nowhere trying to put on more because they know most likely your not going to come back) when I got to the scale I had 1/8 of a tank and scaled out at 86,000 Lbs... I was pretty ticked because now the place was closed, I would have to drive all the way back, wait till morning and almost for certain would not get paid for it.... The load was around 2000 Miles long and you could imagine all the scale dogging I had to do... Took forever...

Anyways It is very common for them to tell you one thing and load you with another....

We had a company try to load 60' rebar on our truck yesterday- after requesting a 48' flat for steel beams... Nice.

But no, they'll never sign that.
