I was in the log business for some time but now that's quite over and I want to start hauling containers can some give me the scoop on hauling them..good companies I'm located now in Atlanta...

Hey Pete, You always come down to my neck of the woods. Pulp wood hasn't slowed much at all. But as far as containers heres what I've found. You will want to get a 50 to 53 drop deck and set it up with locks spaced so that you can haul one 20ft centered, 2-20ftr's or a single 40. Then look for intermodal transporters I've found a few just searching that word online. You could go power only but the DD will give you much better versatility and better $$$$. I have a gig set up as soon as I can get my truck running Jax, FL to Charlotte with container then copper or steel back to FL. 2 to 3 times per week for 1500 per trip. PM me and I can give you more details on what I have found.

There is no such thing as a "BACK-HAUL" everything has a start and stop point, If it needs to be moved then it is a load, period. Insurance, tires, fuel,etc... aren't any cheaper heading towards your home than they are going away. BACKHAUL is BS.

do you have to have to have your own deal for the pulp? or can you lease on to a company and use there trailer and get fuel ,insurance and trailer from them. i live in Clearwater FL and this part of the state is dead.. also could you give me some contact info on these companys.. where do they run? local or FL,GA etc. thanks. Around here the cutters have their own trailers but to sweeten the pot you could offer to bring in your own. I have found used intermodal trailers that could be outfitted for logs. Its the same triler just has under bracing along the bottom channel and 4 bolsters. Have seen IM trailers for $2-3k ea and the refit shold be do-able for around $1k more so you could basically have 2 traliers for less than $10k if you needed them then all the cutter would have to do is load you, cuts out the excuse of "I don't have trailers for you to haul". As far as finding cutters to haul for you can contact timber brokers in NE FL. Callahan Timber is one of them they could give you names of cutters and may be able to tell you someone that is in need of a contract driver. Generally as far as Ins,fuel and all you get paid per loaded mile and you are responsible for everything your truck needs to run. Hope this helps. Let me know if theres more I can do.

I believe what you call an IM trailer is what we call a chassis. Where are you seeing them for sale? Dayton or Budd wheels? Rust? In general what shape are they in? They are really hard to come by around here. I've been looking for two years and haven't been able to find one. They are stacked everywhere but nobody will part with them. I do some container work direct for the shipper and having a chassis and not climbing up on my flatbed and chaining and strapping would be a blessing. I figure I spend an hour a day tieing down.

yes an IM chassis..... truckpaper has them listed all the time....... as for using your flatbed or DD you can install container locks and be done with all the chaining, time/cost would more than pay for them real quickly and no need for different trailer+ins. I would spend the money on the container locks. Click,click,click,click and go...... google container locks

A step deck with container locks would fix that.
