Ya can't judge on a rate per mile... they might be able to give you an average, but as someone who had a hubby leased to them (before he went to Transport America) and a customer of Landstar's and Transport America's...

As an example, I can tell you that I could call Landstar up, tell them that I'll pay $400 including fuel for a load that is about 150 miles total, if I need it in a regular way and it's not a hot/rush thing. On another day, I might call them and have to get that load picked up TODAY and offer them $600 to page the available driver's cell phones in the area and get them off their hineys in a hurry to get my freight picked up within an hour or so and deliver to me the next day.

I'd say that LS has their minimum fees that they charge, but a lot of it is up to the customers and what kinda mood we're in. It also is a challenge between drivers to see who can call in first on loads posted. The most annoying thing I remember from him being w/ LS was those loads posted at a $1 value, or posting them with the fuel included value to make it seem like it was going to be more $$.

When you work with them, you just have to know what your minimum accepted per mile rate is to turn on and move our big truck and go from there on making sound business decisions. I can tell ya that the agents get a good cut and that LS caps what I can offer as a fuel surcharge, too - which didn't used to be the case, but is, now.

I was trying to break out a fuel amount that was higher to make it a better load for the driver (because 100% of that gets passed on, so I'd say $300 for the line haul and $200 for fuel), but then the agent I book most of my stuff with just wanted me to start making the requests as an "all in" type of offer, instead of breaking the fuel out separately. I'm not stupid, that just helps them make more money off of it, which sucks in my opinion because they're not paying that fuel bill, but it is what it is.

my next question is if u could afford it, is it advisable to own ur own trailer of just pull LS trailer? do u get more % per line haul? or what would u all advise

If you can get your own trailer. You get an extra 8% and if you pay them $175 a week for their trailer (flat or step) that will cover the payment.

Confused doesn't begin to describe it. One lady told me vans are now paying 72%, open deck equipment 73%. First I'd heard of the difference. Another lady told me you had your choice of paying % or weekly trailer rental on their trailers. Van pullers on trailer % rental have told me that they have to pay the % on power only loads which never seemed right to me.

There are a lot of drop and hook van loads. If you don't have your own van and want to run hard the weekly rental would be the way to go for a spell to see how much of the freight is drop and hook with the people you are working with. With open deck equipment get your own trailer ASAP.

I have been with Landstar for almost a year and I started at 65% and am STILL at 65% of 100%
