I was looking at some Internationals today that had 2.64, 2.79, 3.36 ratio gears. These trucks might get good fuel mileage, but would they pull? Engine is 435 Cummins ISX in most of these? Thanks for your input!!!

It would depend on the transmission. Odds are, if they were specs with those high gears, they are direct drive. Schnider, Maverick, and Swift do this. With that many trucks spec'd like that, it can't be that bad.

Evil, i too am looking at trucks, imo the lowest gear i am willing to consider is a 3.36 ratio, otherwise i feel i would have to drop gears to stay/be in the proper rpm range in the slower states, or run faster than i want to too be in the range thus defeating my goal of good mpg. just my opinion.

you are looking at 3.36's with an overdrive. he's looking at 2.64's with a directdrive transmision. in the end it's the same basically but you get to use a direct drive which tends to be a stronger transmision for all the rookies they hire to tear up.

EC you need to get the model of the trans and run that number to find the first gear ratio and use that to figure out the overall first gear ratio at the ground. then do the same for a truck with a more typical gear setup to compare them.

Lots of times those truck will be set up with a 9 or 10 speed with a very low first gear

Yeah, you need the low gear to get rolling and get started on a grade. I read somewhere that a higher rear end ratio with a direct trans has a lower drag co efficient and robs less power from the drive train. My gut tells me that a higher ratio with an overdrive trans is more practical and will pull much better. There are smarter guys who spec these trucks for high mileage and low maintenance and the setups you describe are their choices. I'm sure you'll get sum tech experts to reply with the scientific answer.

the last international i drove had a Detroit 60 with 3:36's and a 10 speed, it pulled real nice, but as medicine man said, it has a very low first gear

From what I'm told around here the higher the gear the better the pulling ....the higher the gear the more fuel you suck

The higher the numbers the lower the ratio.

WOW I did'nt know you could get a ratio that low, over here I would never get out of low range.
