I have an allowance from my former company I was with for 25 years. The allowance is for training and or schooling. My question is I am about to get my cdl and I don't necessarily want to be shipped out to Timbucktoo on a bus and leave my wife and kids if Idon't have to, so I am wondering if any owner operators or companies would be interested in training me, so I can get some time under my belt and hopefuly land a job later down the road with a local oufit being able to come home every night, or at least every weekend. I guess I would have to be put on the books so I could have my time recorded. There is more to it than just handing over some money to someone so I can be trained, but I do believe it would be in any companies interest, especially a small outfit... I guess I am asking if anyone has heard of any outfit doing something like this before?

There would be a big liability issue in this situation. Say if you got hurt, or for some reason accidently hurt someone else in the process (not saying that it would happen, but just wht if's). Also most companies want to have a certificate showing that you completed "schooling". Some of the companies do offer there own traininig, but many more go through local community colleges.

Learning from an expereinced o/o would be a better idea than going to school, but I don't think any company will be able to absorb the liability or recognize the time you put in for the training. They just don't teach real world stuff in the schools.

Contact expediting carriers and check with fleet owners . The experience requirements are less stringent there . It would likely be straight truck experience but that might get you better opportunity for a local job with a towing company , van line , construction , etc . No new drivers seem to consider that . They all go for tractor trailer .

Be advised, if you go this route. You will be restricted for at least a year.

Without a certificate from an accredited school. You will be locked into this job or one like it, for at least a year. Regardless of how bad it gets.

Hello Trenton N.J..I hope i can help you with this crazy crap going on in this business right now as we speak..
I wanna tell you that you are a very smart man for the question you bring to this forum.

Believe it or not 20 years ago i was trained that way.I was trained from an old timer for 6-10 solid months.I too did not wanna go and leave my loved ones and loving family and friends.I had a LIFE.And i also new even back then it was a ''scam'' this trucking school crap.Back then they wanted 2,000 for it and that was alot of money...So i went on a hunt to find out how in the hell can i get around this ''school scam'' and still achieve my C.D.L....

Well with alot of hard work and lifting every rock i could i had found someone to help me through this process minus the school crap...Low and behold here i am today 20 years later still pissed off at the trucking business...lmao

I hate to say this to you but today with all the corporate corruption, government corruption and greed, trucking schools have jumped on that band wagon too.And i am here to tell you DO NOT sign up for these trucking school's that promise you a bed of roses AND A JOB IN THE END.In the end you get a bed of TURDS....LOL,LOL

If you have no life,no friends and no loved ones in N.J. and you wanna escape life's responsibilities, then great by all means sign the dotted line and take to the lonely highway..If your a runner at life and wanna disappear then go for it.If you are in the closet and don't wanna crap in your own back yard then go for it...LOL,LOL

But if you wanna still have a good life,be with your wife, kids, family and friends and you have something that resembles a life, then no wayyyyyyyyy...You strike me as a good man with a good life that actually wants to be there for his family....Then no way would i get involved with the trucking school SCAM.Because that is what it is,A BIG MARKETING SCAM...AIMED TO STEAL YOUR MONEY,YOUR HOME,YOUR WIFE AND MOST OF ALL YOUR LIFE....

I learned many years ago in N.Y. AND N.J to drive one of these 18's.If you want i will shoot you my phone# and tell you the cold hard facts of the trucking school scam and you can here all the facts and then make an educational decision of what you wanna do.....

I am not a freak nor a cyber wack job..Just a good working man trying to help people not get caught in this ''MARKETING SCAM''..If i were you i would take this suggestion talk to me man to man and i will give you the REAL OUTLOOK and cold hard facts about this ''scam'' on this trucking FANTASY everyone seems to glamour....LOL

And yes i am from N.Y. and yes i am a ball buster and a ''WISE GUY''...LMAO

    Baack Thanks this.

People that ask to be trained by an O/O don't understand why someone chooses to be an O/O . They want to be in their truck doing it their way in the most profitable manner . If they want somebody else in their truck they're running team or taking the designated other along for companionship . Their truck is their pride and joy and they are not going to put an inexperienced driver behind the wheel and risk damage . That's really too much to ask .

I am going to a school. This is once I get my license...

I am going to complete a school. This is for after I am done with school. I am not sure how it all works but i want to look into paying for more experience through my former employer for more training...

i am going to complete a school. i want to then use my allowance for further training out on the road.

hope its not as bad as it sounds... i am just hoping to further my experience by paying my way using my allowance from my former employer which is to be used for training.

You'll get additional training at any company you go to, after school.

Very few companies will hire you straight out of school, as a solo driver. None of the big guys will.

You'll do 10-60 days of additional training once you get on with a company.

The only O/O's I can think of are expedite fleet owners . If a graduate has real potential they might team him with an experienced driver . The issue is insurance . It's the insurance companies that make it difficult for a graduate to get a job .
I just read a post on another forum of a husband wife team right out of trucking school that got hired by a fleet owner to run an expedite straight truck .
