My advise would be don't do it, not at this time (Jan/Feb-09), UNLESS you have cash in hand for unforeseen expenses, and then, only if your monthly family expenses are minimal or zero. After procrastinating for about 1 year, in Sept-08 I purchased a used tractor (ARROW) and leased it and myself to Crete. I'm doing OK, getting by at the moment on 1600/1800 miles a week, but ONLY because I don't have a growing family, and because with the exception of the tractor payment, everything else is paid for. It's only been 4 months, but so far so good re Crete. I want to make it clear that I did NOT purchase or lease a tractor from Crete. I purchased the tractor on my OWN, and leased it and myself to Crete. I would NOT consider ANY of the lease/purchase "opportunities" that are offered by ANY carrier. So if you're "thinking about it", I hope this helps.

Family and expenses aside, how much have you been able to pay yourself on average per week?

All I can say times are hard, and may get harder, but as for now, it still can be done. But it will take hard work, much planning ahead of time, and dedication.

As a Company Driver I ran the truck as much as I could as if it was my own. I ran the miles off using the rates being paid for an O/O along with taking the amount for Fuel out and I would had made 4 times more than as a Company driver. Only leaving to take out my Truck payments, Taxes and Insurance out. Providing I can get as good miles as I did as a Company driver, which I will or better, Truck Payment and Insurance can be made in one week. But You have to be with a Company that going to run you, not sit 1/2 the time.

As a Company Driver, I made as much in Jan 09 in 2.5 weeks as I did from the time I left out after Thanksgiving and getting home for Christmas. And what I seen with the Company the O/O are getting more miles and better runs than the Company Drivers.

So before you buy, find a company that will run you and not have you sitting.

Thats just it you have to count on them to run you so you can make it. there is nothing moving right now what is so hard to understand about this? run your numbers all you want

I could buy jolly ranchers really cheap and sell them to 5th graders for a profit .02cents bulk and resell for 25cents each ... but If I cant get in the school since I'm an balding middle aged white guy. all I have is a bunch of Jolly ranchers.
And you bought a 2001 columbia with a 500 cat
My 2002 Columbia with a 500cat just went at auction last year for 7k hope you paid less than that

Lets just say that iIhave been able to easily make truck payments and pay for all day to day living expenses (reminder..no house or car payments) I am more concerned about clearing debt so I've made additional principal payments on the tractor. This O/O is totally dependent upon the company I've leased to getting me loads, so I won't relax until this tractor is paid for. Do I think it was worth the risk at 1600/1800 miles a week? No. Hopefully miles will increase in the spring.
