IT and insurance

Just got my authority and found out that some, or all, brokers will need to be added as certificate holders. I called my insurance agent (the policy is through northland) to let them know that, and was told that if they needed to add someone on there may be a "small fee".
I also signed up for the internet truckstop loadboard and want to send in the info so the brokers can use the file check feature, my questions?
1. Is anybody else charged a "small fee" for this from there insurance agent, or from the insurance company (like northland)?
2. Does anyone else have the file check from IT and would brokers still need to be added to the insurance if they are using file check?

thanx and great site

My Insurance broker does not charge for them, however, I did have to pay a broker fee so maybe it was included in that. They are all different.

I dont use file check with IT, cause your gonna have to send the broker all that info (w-9, authority, etc.) again ajyway, and your gonna have to send then an insurance certificate with the broker listed in it anyway. You can do it but IMO its a waste of time. I keep copies of all that info scanned on my laptop, then email or fax it using my online fax number.

Never been charged for it. My insurance agent said she got paid when I got the policy. Providing that info to brokers is just her providing excellent customer service.

That's exactly how I do it. I've got my little netbook laptop with built-in air card and a all-in-one printer-scanner-fax in the truck. They all run through a 400 watt inverter. I've got a file set up for each broker and also a file called "Carrier Information Packet" which includes a copy of my authority certificate, Acord Insurance Certificate, signed W-9 and a Carrier info sheet I put together that lists references as well as my DOT and MC numbers. I attach everything to emails and it works great. A broker can attache their contract to an email, I initial and sign, scan and email it back. I got my current load while sitting in a rest stop off I-80 in Iowa that way. Pretty slick.

I have Northland also. I think maybe you get charged dealing with Northland directly instead of an agent?

Sorry for no reply. Sinus infection...right into my teeth!
Contacted my insurance agent and there is no charge to have a broker added as a certificate holder. Also, went and bought an all in one for the laptop, it scans everything as a jpeg right now and said i need some kind of software (OCR or something to convert it into text). I think the software that came with the drivers can also convert it into different formats but i had to download the software from the website to install it onto windows 7 and really haven't had a chance to play with it yet.
Thanx for all the great post.

OCR is optical character recognition software.

you only need that if you want to scan a document and then alter it. Like changing the text. THe scanner scans as a picture basicly and the OCR will recongize the text in the document so you can change it.

You don't really need it. You jut need to be able to print so you can ign your name then scan and resend. Everyone can open Jpeg. or you can convert to PDF for acrobat.

now if you want to get fancy you have your signature scaned as a digital stamp so you don't even have to print and rescan. you can open them in your email, open in your editing oftware, add the stamp and resend
