Inconsistent holidays costing trucking industry

Quote:
A trucking industry body says there is a sound economic argument for coordinating public holidays around the country.
The Australian Trucking Association has written to federal Treasurer Wayne Swan asking that the Productivity Commission look into the cost of inconsistent holidays.
The association's chief executive, Stuart St Clair, says a lack of consistency is costing the industry money.
He says holidays including Labour Day should be made uniform across all states and territories.
"Here in Queensland and the Northern Territory we celebrate it on the fourth of May, but if you're in New South Wales it's the fifth of October and if you're in Tasmania it's the ninth of March," Mr St Clair said.
"There are holidays that can be coordinated - Queen's Birthday would be another one - to ensure that we have a harmonisation across the states."
Mr St Claire says a Council of Australian Governments meeting in 1993 agreed to the idea but nothing has been done.
