I stared Orientation on Monday here in Cookeville, got my nice shiny red uniforms and I am working my way through training. So far things seem great. All the people I meet are extremely nice and helpful. I do hope it continues like that.

My question will probably be covered today or tomorrow but I was wondering what to expect in training when I leave to go with a trainer. So far I have not even seen a truck upclose and not sure what I need to bring on the road with me. Any suggestions or heads up about what to expect.

You might look here http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...-drivers/16652-packing-list-for-students.html for what you may need. Kind of surprised that you haven't even gone out to check out a truck. Eons ago, when I started training for driving a city bus with the local transit agency, the we went out the very first day and got the general tour of a couple of transit buses, got basically familiar with gauges, controls, rear engine start procedure, etc. But, as I said, that was almost 30 years ago and in a bus, not a truck.

    Keep posting your experiences.....

I worked for Averitt Express from 1999 to 2006 and I loved it there. You have to know how to be creative in order to make money driving Line Haul. Once you go local as long as you are willing to work you will make money.

When I drove Line Haul I took all the on-line courses to do the dock work and then when I would get to a service center they would let me work the dock for an hour up to a few hour where I would make $20-$120. That can add up pretty fast.

When I drove local I would do the same thing or volunteer to pull extra loads and I made more than I ever did driving OTR and I was home everyday and had every weekend off too.

I was very happy there would have never left, but I had to move 1,300 miles away to take over my family owned trucking company that I thought I would never have apart of but when my dad and brother both died that left me holding the bag in 2006.

I hope you keep us informed. I've heard good things about Averitt and it would be great to hear about current training, working, etc. One thing I was wondering about is their pet policy. Since I couldn't find anything on their website, I would assume they don't have one.

Hey Derf, how are things going? I've submitted all the paper work required and had a video conference interview today with HR. So far all seems to be positive, just waiting to hear back from recruiter on an orientation start date.

Well rough day...Had appt. with surgeon about a hernia and surgery is scheduled for Monday. This blows my orientation out of the water for at least 6 weeks. Don't guess I'll be doing anything with Averitt for at least month. Wish everyone the best that was starting Monday.
