I don't notice a bit of difference with an automatic. You're not looking down at the shifter anyway, no matter what you're driving. It's all the same going down the interstate.

I've been in all 48 and Canada but I guess you mean with Averitt. Lubbock TX to the west and Milwaukee WI to the north.

Here's an old Kenworth for ya. I think it was a '78. That was at my second job. It had a 280HP V8 Cummins with center point steering and torsion bar suspension; steered like a beast and rode like a buckboard.

Oh nice! A cab-over! I bet that's a different animal altogether! I'd be lost! Then again, I'd say it's easier to tell how close to someone's back bumper you are...then on the other hand, you shouldn't be too close that you can't see their tires... I'm thinking of buying one of those gopro cameras and filming just in case some screwball decides to dart in front if me and slam on the breaks... That would be a bad situation to be in if you don't have proof to protect yourself. Anyways...

On another curious note, as an Averitt driver, is one only supposed to stop for the "10 hour" at an Averitt yard or does it matter? I'd like to take advantage of wifi whenever possible. My FaceTime application on my ipad will become my close friend in the days to come.

You can take your breaks wherever you wish. Many times, especially with elogs, I prefer a company yard where I can fuel, shower etc off the clock and not be eating into my 14. Plus we do a lot of load relays and you will be there when your trailer comes in or you might be waiting on an LTL load.

For instance last week I dropped a TX load in Nashville and then got an Atlanta load from yard, which I dropped Friday night at railroad yard. I got an empty trailer at rail yard which I brought home for the weekend. Now I have load on Augusta yard which has to be in Jacksonville FL by noon tomorrow. I will most likely leave tonight after the race since I hate having to get up super early to leave the house and run the risk of running late.

Do you find yourself staying at an Averitt yard more often than a typical truck stop?

For the most part, but mainly because I detest Loves and Pilot which have pretty much taken over. There are few old school truckstops left (and dying by the day it seems) where they have good sit down meals and decent parking. I will stay at those if I happen to be in the area.

Also, in time you will learn which customers allow us to park on their property. That works out nice to stay off duty while waiting to pick up and deliver and be able to complete your break and not have to worry about moving too far and starting your clock.

You said you go through VA a lot. Do you recall ever going through particular areas off of I-81 around the Abingdon area or further north (as the crow flies) to the city of Norton or Wise County? It would only be a wee speck on the map...wee'er than most... US 23 goes right through here and up to Columbus, OH, via Kentucky.

I actually had to look it up and don't believe so. I've been around Pikeville but came from London KY and when I left I cut back over to Lexington KY.

Me being on the Dollar General dedicated I try to be at my first stop of the day the night before or at the DC at night. When my 14 gets short I have just pulled into a Dollar General store and take my 10....that's 1 thing I like about being on dedicated Dollar General that there are plenty of stores and we can park at any of them if we need for our 10

    MUSTANGGT Thanks this.

I'm starting my week with 248 mile trip due by noon tomorrow, but going down tonight even though I am back on paper logs. I don't like to start off Monday after getting up so early and using almost half my day getting there.

I was out for six weeks on medical leave and lost the 2013 Cascadia. I got a 2008 Volvo when I came back and FM promised to get me in something newer as soon as he could. But I decided I would rather stay in this one as long as possible. It's a decent truck and I had forgotten how nice it is having the 300 gallon fuel capacity, plus not bothering with DEF. It has 678k on the clock and have no idea when they decide to sell it. I stayed in last Pete well over 800k.

chopper I was in your neighborhood Wednesday. I ran up empty from Calhoun GA to the tile place. I loaded a 3 stop TX and brought it to a Laredo driver waiting in NAS. Then I was there until Friday in the shop, but was worth it to get new tires and APU fixed like new, plus I got 20 hours breakdown.

When I was on dedicated Mercedes he would just get me a substitute truck and I would keep rolling but not the same back in old TL.
