I'm about to make the move into the industry. Want to start school next month. I've been researching companies, and it sounds like Averitt is a good one. I live in northern Oklahoma and would like to be a regional driver out of Tulsa. Haven't talked to a recruiter yet.

What's the hiring process like, and should I start the process before committing to a driving school?

You should call and see if your school is one that they accept students from

They accept grads of that school. On another thread I got the advice to talk with my preferred company to basically get pre-hired before school. Obviously on the condition that I do well. Anyone ever dealt with that process before?

Ya, your school should have short applications from all the companies that they deal with that just takes basic info from you which are usually faxed or email over to them while your in school. Then usually within a couple days you'll get your "pre-hire". All it really means is that on paper you meet the minimum quals to get on. We had Averitt recruiters come to our school twice while we were there. Seemed like a good place. I'm considering applying for a local position where I am but trying to hold out for a couple Union companies that I've contacted. Hard to get exact payscale info for Averitt which sucks but I've never really heard of people not liking them.

Just like snatale42 said, if you are interested in them apply now and get the pre hire. With that you are not locked into anything it's just a first step to see if you qualify. I considered Averitt myself and everyone I spoke with seemed to like it. I believe they try and get you home every weekend and they have automatics and regional. Also if I remember right orientation is in Cookville,TN and the pay for it wasn't terrible.

    Good luck!

Just got off the phone with Averitt recruiter. She told me to fill out an app after I started school. Got some skeletons in the closet such as felonies and dui's that are as old as most student drivers, but she thought we could work around them. Hope she knows what she's talking about cs I'm paying for school myself. We shall see. Good Luck RackEmUp.!!!

Yea, thanks, jarhead! Good luck to you too. I submitted my info to them this past weekend, but haven't got a call from a recruiter yet. So apparently they won't pay for school with a year commitment (at least I haven't seen any info on that), but they will reimburse later on up to a certain amount. I have been checking their available positions for the past few weeks and they seem to change quite a bit. I'm thinking that by the time I go to school next month and graduate a month later, there will be other positions available and the ones posted now will probably be gone. Then, take into consideration that I'm a total newbie and will most likely have about a month and a half of OTR training...who knows what they'll have by the time I get assigned a rig.

So I got my CDL permit today. Got pre-enrolled and have an appointment scheduled for HazMat/TWIC. I'm scheduled to start CDL school in about 3 weeks on May 27th. I did get a call from an Averitt recruiter last week. Not much was said on that call, but I will be submitting an application and talking with them more in the next few weeks. I've talked to a couple other companies and plan to keep that trend going. At this point, Averitt would be my first pick, but I am keeping my options open.
